Chapter By Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at a time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

So where did we leave off before Christmas break? Oh right, our hero got himself trapped trying to meet with someone who can help him make contact with…his contact. I just realized how silly that sounds.

I mean, give Jake credit. He thought he was saving someone in danger, so at least we know he’s the hero. He even suspected at one point it might be a trap but couldn’t risk an innocent girl (or possibly hooker whose clients got too rough but still innocent as far as she doesn’t deserve this) getting beaten or killed. That’s my kind of hero. Let’s see how he gets out of this.

Well, good thing Bethdroid showed up to save Jake’s butt. Not that it wasn’t fun “watching” him deal with a trio of robot bulls without his lazer (the “girl in distress”, who was also an android because they’re everywhere, stole that when she shoved him into the trap) but that’s three out of four, so it’s lucky Beth was smart enough to plant a tracker on him. And it looks like now he’s accepting her as his partner on this case. Neat.

It turns out the contact to the contact was working for the contact’s jealous boyfriend, as in Warbride’s would be “Warhusband” Vargas. (Wonder if he’s related to Angry Joe?) Not surprising that the terrorist boyfriend of a terrorist would result to murder because he doesn’t know what “ex” means. Also not surprising that went outer contact tells him all this and STILL insist he can help make contact with Warbride that he doesn’t believe him and just stuns him. I guess it serves as catharsis without executing the guy. Again, Jake is still a hero.

This was a short but enjoyable chapter. We get a good description of the fight with the bulls, character growth, and the only complaint is that this kind of slowed down the story. I do hope when Jake finally meets up with Warbride he punches Vargas dead in the face. We’ll see if that happens next time…next time.
