Yes, I’ve registered my complaints about this show. It’s like they dropped Superman and his Earth parents into an anime world with people who bear the name of people he knows. I just saw their take on Steel, dropping the armor for some kind of mecha exosuit, and I’m highly disappointed. At least he’s the same race he is in the comics, but I’m sorry.
That’s just not as cool as his usual armor. Also, maybe it’s explained in the story, but why is Superman now using a blue energy force…power thing?
I didn’t even plan for both of those fights to involve a character named Metallo, though again the DCAU is more accurate.
With that out of my system, I still want a complete list of every Superman TV intro, and this show doesn’t just drop a title card and call it a day. There’s an actual intro, something Superman & Lois doesn’t have, which is why we haven’t done a Superman intro in this series since the Legion Of Super-Heroes team-up series. This is the first Superman we’ve gotten in animation outside of direct-to-video movies and DC Super Friends, a series of shorts put out by Imaginext by Fisher Price. So whatever faults I have with the show itself, I’m going to judge the intro as the intro to this show. How does it hold up?
If this wasn’t trying to be a Superman show I’d probably actually like this show. The intro certainly makes it look good, though it’s a bit short for my taste. So we don’t get a good look at everything…or really anything outside of how our main trio–Superman, Not-Lois, and Almost-Jimmy–are friends who stand by each other. It looks like Lois and Jimmy are about to join in the fight, as if they have powers we don’t get to see. Superman flies around, gets visited as a kid by some energy ghost hologram never explained in the intro, so we don’t know what that is. That’s all there is.
I do like the music, and the tone does match the pseudo-anime style of the show. Superman looks neat, but he doesn’t get a chance to look cool using his powers to fight baddies or save innocent people. He doesn’t even get a cat out of a tree. The show is well made, but it’s such a lousy adaptation of the world Superman inhabits even while giving us a more accurate Superman than anything Zack Snyder forced on us that other people get into it, but I just can’t. I’m too invested not only in Superman but in the world of Metropolis itself to accept pretty boy Deathstroke and all the other swaps and re-imagines this show does.
The intro itself is actually pretty good, but it could have shown off the threats, powers, and character interactions a bit more if it had been a longer one. So how long do we have to wait for the next intro in this series? Check the archives for all the other Superman intros until then.
