BW’s Morning Article Link: Just Say No To Hydra

Even though Marvel in recent years has tried to distance their fictional group Hydra from the Nazis, their ties are still strong in fans minds. When Marvel created a campaign for their Secret Empire event by encouraging stores to “come under control” of Hydra, there was a backlash, and fans still hate where this storyline has gone. And for someone like me who isn’t really following the events all I know is a Cosmic Cube turns into a little girl and Red Skull uses her to make Steve Rogers always a Hydra member except he wasn’t except he was…it’s confusing as heck, ticking off fans and I can see why a number of comic stores have refused to take part.

ICv2 is reporting that one store has actually fought back against the promotional campaign with a symbol of their own, preferring to “join” and recruit a movement to oppose Hydra’s reign of the Marvel Universe (or at least Earth), including creating a symbol of their own. It’s not that this is a bad story, but it is the wrong story for Steve Rogers, and whatever the conclusion this is going to taint the character for years to come. Tony Stark is STILL getting flack from the first Civil War and he’s dead now. (He’ll get better. It’s comics and Robert Downey Junior hasn’t stepped down from the role.)

BW versus Cracked: Why Catwoman Won’t Help The Movies

Catwoman as she revealed in the bible for Batman: The Animated Series.

I don’t think DC’s writers have ever decided what Selina Kyle is supposed to be. Is she a cat burglar? Former prostitute turned parkour because she wants to be free while blackmailing the lady running the orphanage? Animal rights activist? Crimefighter? Mob boss? Candy mint? Memorex? Left Twix? It jumps around so much I can’t keep track of her and I stopped trying years ago. Catwoman is whatever that writer wants her to be and it will be changed by the next one.

I haven’t done a “versus” article in a while but a recent video posting from Cracked, whether in jest or not, elicited a response. I’m hoping this is all in fun but, while I’m not against a Catwoman movie that doesn’t suck (sorry, Halley Berry, but even seeing you in a leather bikini couldn’t save a movie that suffers from poor adaptation and worse writing) the comments by the presenter that a Catwoman movie is what superhero movies need to get out this supposed slump I must be the only person not seeing (granted, I haven’t gotten to the movies much lately for financial and medical reasons) is a woman whose description changes like the wind is not it.

“Yesterday’s” Comic> Thundercats: Hammerhand’s Revenge #4

Guys, you’re supposed to blast BEFORE you create a giant stone sculpture.

I know, I missed a Sauron reference. I never got into Lord Of The Rings, okay?

Thundercats: Snarf Must Die Horribly And Painfully #4

or as it says on the cover:

Thundercats: Hammerhand’s Revenge #4

WildStorm (March, 2004)

No, I will not get over how Snarf is written because it was shoved into my face again. But I’ll get to that.

BW’s Morning Article Link: The Death Of The Movie Theater?

It seems like there’s a move to keep people in their homes, except for kids whom they’re more than happy to kick out, or at least restrict their movements by pushing things that keep you home. Here’s a new one: just stay home and watch a new release movie. J.J. Abrams is the latest director to advocate a new project called “Screening Room” where you can, for a fee similar to warehouse stores like BJs, rent new movies the same day they’re in theaters. No more going to theaters. Look, I understand some real jerks pop up at theaters and think they’re doing MST3K or talking on their phones (if they’re texting, why are you watching their text?) among other issues, but the theater is a good way to get out and find other fans of something, or just get out of the house and see something on the BIG screen. Then again, people watch a movie on their chocolate bar-sized screens and think it’s great, so maybe I’m just old.

ScreenCrush contributor Britt Hayes also tries to make the point that while Screening Room has it’s benefits so does going to the theater. What do you guys think? He also worries that the movie theater could go the way of the video store. Does anyone leave the house anymore?

Tronix’s Free Comic Book Day Wants

With Free Comic Book Day this Saturday I’m hoping I can get myself there. I haven’t driven much in over a year (if you don’t know why, you must be new here, so I’ll direct you to last year’s postings–especially if “hospital” is your favorite word), and I’ve been having trouble getting my sleep cycle back on track. I’m expecting most of this year’s want list to be long gone by the time I get there. They disappear fast after all. I haven’t even checked to see what guests are going to be at my comic store of choice, Legends Of Superheroes in Middlebury, CT.

I also won’t be able to buy any comics since my income is still $0 (points to the top of the sidebar with a wink) but I beg you to do so if you go. The comic stores who participate pay for these “free” books out of their own pocket and the comic store industry has been struggling to survive and rebrand. They’re mostly run by fellow fans (now that the speculator market’s burst) so please show them some love when you get your free comics.

So what comics do I hope is still there? I went through the previews on the official FCBD site focusing on titles that interest me (I’m not interested in Archie’s current offerings and I don’t even watch the actual Fresh Of The Boat series, so a tie-in comic doesn’t grab my attention) and came up with the following list from the gold and silver offerings. Will any of them be there when and if I arrive? I won’t know until Saturday. Note that these links will probably disappear when it’s time to promote the 2018 Free Comic Book Day, so this really isn’t for the archives.

BW’s Morning Article Link: Splatoon The Comic

Embed from Getty Images

Splatoon is rather popular with my web-based friends, and with so many other people the sequel probably should have been a launch title for the Nintendo Switch. While I’ve never played it, I find it interested that an online shooter designed for kids and using all bright colors with no real violence is as popular as it is. And now the manga is being translated by Viz, along with a few other new manga and art books translations you might want to check out.

h/t to Galvanic’s “Bulletoon Weekly” feature for the heads up.
