The He-Man Comics> Introduction To The Newspaper

Occasionally I come up with an article series to get me to read something. Like Chapter By Chapter, or Scanning My Collection. And here’s the newest member of that list:

The official title of this series (for brevity) is The He-Man Comics. Adding “Newspaper” to the banner just further explains what I’m reviewing. I’ve already tackled all the Masters Of The Universe comics in my collection and I already have an article series for mini-comics, which includes our Eternian and Etherian friends. This however is something very different. Dark Horse has been putting together collections of Masters Of The Universe and Princess Of Power materials, including the aforementioned minicomics. Recently they added a new collection, of the newspaper strips.

“There were newspaper strips?” some of you may be asking and yes there were. I didn’t know about them either until Dark Horse announced the collection but I otherwise hadn’t been paying attention due to…other concerns. Then recently my friend Sean surprised me with an early birthday present (very early because my birthday is in July, so the rest of you still have time 😀 ) that he happened to see on sale.

This sucker is huge. It’s a hardcover omnibus that I could probably kill a man with if I more Skeletor than He-Man. (Let’s be honest: I’m more Prince Adam. Okay, Orko, but without the magic.) It’s so big that it would take a long time to read and review, so I’ve chosen this route, a 15+ article series to look over each story arc in the same vein of Chapter By Chapter. But before we begin the trip down this particular rabbit hole I thought a little explanation was in order. This is going to be short, so if you want the full details by all means get this book. It’s amazing just from flipping through it. I can’t wait to see what I get out of the actual review.

Maybe it was the recent passing of Carrie Fisher that woke Lucasfilm up to the limited amount of female characters in a franchise that transcends gender, but they’re finally giving the little girls a closer look at their role models. ICv2 has information and early videos on Star Wars: Forces Of Destiny, which will focus on the few females of the canon films and animated series, aimed at young girls. Most of the focus in these clips is Rey from the one Star Wars movie I still have yet to see. If you have to ask why you’re new here and haven’t heard what happened in 2016. I do really want to see it.

Scanning My Collection: The Adventures Annual Crossover part 2

I don’t think the writers often know what reality the DC Adventures comics took place in. They kept bringing in elements of the regular DC universe, although it would end up being contradicted by the DCAU shows, the source material in this case. For example, in issue #25 of The Batman Adventures we see DCAU Batman teaming with 90s mullet Superman and fighting full head and beard 90s Lex Luthor. In an upcoming (to be reviewed) issue of Superman Adventures we’ll have Superman leaving with the DCU version of the Justice League at the time, although the concept of a Justice League in the DCAU didn’t exist for a few years yet, AFTER The New Batman Superman Adventures went off the air. It’s like the writers really want to use mainstream DC stories but forgot they were writing an adaptation of the TV show based on those comics but not set in that world.

I’ve just assumed Adventures In The DC Universe was set in the main DC universe, but in the style of the Adventures comics. So while Doctor Fate’s bookending story has to take place in the DCAU based on how it ties back to Superman’s problems with Akamin, it gets confusing when we come to Zatanna and her two tales, which involve the same amulet, but involves characters that technically could be in the DCAU but never shown, yet contains a character I know isn’t in the DCAU ever (his first animated appearance wasn’t even in this continuity but in the later Young Justice show), everything gets really confused. I guess Fate was right about reality breaking down for this tale.

Hey, there are only two “M Words” here. You broke the theme!

BW’s Morning Article Link: Superman Gets “Gothamed”

Superman: New Krypton

I heard they wanted to do it, but I put it out of my mind because it’s a lame idea. Oh, but they did it. Instead of creating an original sci-fi series with whatever they wanted, SyFy went ahead and created Krypton, a Gotham style prequel to Superman, but set on Kal-El’s homeworld before it blew up and possibly set in the DC Movieverse of Man Of Steel. What was even the point? Does it look interesting? Sure. Did it have to be tied to Superman? Only if they wanted to get it greenlit because otherwise who cares? Just another misuse of a popular name.

Can we please keep David S. Goyer away from Superman so he can create his own stuff, some of which are interesting ideas divorced from Superman, and stop ruining Superman? Please?

Scanning My Collection: The Adventures Annual Crossover part 1

First of all, slight change in plans. I am going to review the He-Man/Thundercats crossover as I usually would, taking up the next two Saturday spots instead of the Adventures titles. It just seems the right way to go about it because I don’t want to spoil too much of it at once (being a Today’s Comic review of fairly recent comics). Plus I need the extra space because this has to be a two-part review.

So what are we doing today? DC Adventures. Remember how I put Adventures In The DC Universe in with the DCAU comics even though it’s set in the regular DC continuity of the time? Well, this mini-event is the reason, a storyline that doesn’t require all three issues to read but does connect between the Adventures titles, including Batman & Robin Adventures and Superman Adventures. There is a medallion that ties the three together, as well as the origins of the DCAU versions of Batman and Superman. I could review them individually but seeing as this storyline is what combines them I wanted to examine the implications further…if there are any. We’ll begin with the first comic in the set.
