Kong: Skull Island Final Trailer Drops

King Kong storms his way through the Skull Isl...

King Kong storms his way through the Skull Island jungle. From issue #3 of the comic mini-series Kong: King of Skull Island. By Markosia Comics (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures have released what they’re calling the final trailer for Kong: Skull Island, their attempt to set up a King Kong versus Godzilla remake. And they may understand the whole “shared universe” setup idea better than their DC counterparts do. So Legendary is better than the distributor? It depends on how good the movie is I guess. Legendary’s Godzilla suffered from not letting us see the monster battles, which hopefully the next director will remember to have in the sequel.

The original 1933 movie is…really that old? It’s also considered a classic, and none of the remakes, reboots, sequels, or animated shows have ever achieved that level. In fact they’re usually either scorned or made fun of. Even Peter Jackson’s most recent attempt has complaints of being too long, and I could have done without the creepy angle of Kong and Ann’s “relationship”. Also, why is it so hard to keep Jack in the same job? In the original he’s a sailor, in the 1976 movie I want to see like a train wreck aftermath (which what I hear it was) he’s a paleontologist, in the animated musical (yes, that actually exists and I really want to see it) he’s…I don’t actually know, Wikipedia says nothing, and in the 2005 movie he’s a screenwriter, possibly because the ACTUAL screenwriter wanted to date Ann Darrow. Is it really that hard? At least this remake doesn’t have a counterpart.

I’ve gotten off track, but that’s because I enjoy most of the movies I’ve seen for one reason or another. (King Kong Lives was kind of boring when I watched it.) And yes, the original will always be my favorite. But that doesn’t mean I won’t enjoy this new one. Or does it? Let’s watch the trailer.

Marvel Adventures (at least this version) is an anthology series that doesn’t take place in the regular Marvel continuity. It claims to be in the animated style, but I don’t think it’s based either on the cartoons of the time (on Fox Kids, UPN, and in syndication…unlike the DCAU the connection was reduced to sharing voice actors while the second seasons of Iron Man and Fantastic Four shared an art style and a showrunner with UPN’s Incredible Hulk) or the other “Adventures” titles with the X-Men and Spider-Man that were wiped out of their own continuity thanks to the last issue of Adventures Of The X-Men. So for now let’s assume it’s completely new continuity.

BW’s Morning Article Link: Bad Superhero Games

adventures-of-the-x-men-8

I think it was last week that I posted link to Arcade Sushi’s list of really good superhero video games. Well, for every good game there are plenty of bad ones. That’s what caused the video game crash of the 80s, and it was only thanks to Nintendo’s marketing genius (how rarely do I get to call marketing “genius” when it comes to media?) that they survived. Of course that means playing these really bad superhero games. It’s amazing how often the X-Men come up on this list.

Chapter By Chapter> 1st Phase Shifters & The Omega Capsule ch. 3

Chapter by Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

Usually I don’t read the chapter until after the intro. It makes my acting like I haven’t read it yet seem more real because I actually haven’t. “Is John going to be eaten by the dinosaur? Let’s find out.” isn’t as big a tease if I don’t know myself. Sadly I don’t see dinosaurs in our future.

I read ahead because the chapters are so short. Granted my schedule is tight the next few weeks as events happen in my life, so a short chapter may be a good thing right about now, but it does mean taking time to get through things. Thus far we’ve seen two shapeshifting aliens, Crede (now a human) and Hal (taking the form of a dog), come to Earth and find a place to stay. This chapter has Crede taking his first day as a working stiff, for a nearby restaurant. Hopefully we’re seeing the supporting cast of friends this chapter. Maybe at some point they’ll be used to explain a few of my questions?
