Maybe Hydra Started A Cab Company?

Hail Hydra

Now THIS ONE started just as I was getting back on the grid.

With those fateful words fans of the original Captain America threw a fit! Parodies and angry comments abounded. But how bad is it really? And why the fallout? I have my thoughts, but first my fellow reviewing person Cferra has allowed me to post his review of the infamous Steve Rogers: Captain America #1 so that this panel is in the proper context. And to get me back in the comic review format:

Steve Rogers Captain America #1

I wanted to find the cover in CFerra’s review. Since I couldn’t this is still better than the pin-up with the wrong shield.

Captain America: Steve Rogers #1

or at least that’s what the Grand Comic Database calls it

Morning Article Link: President Wonder Woman?

Supergirl CBS1

No, not technically Wonder Woman, it’s not some new stupidity by DC Comics. Linda Carter, who played the only proper live-action Wonder Woman (and still looks like she could pull it off), will have a recurring role as the President in the CW continuation of Supergirl. Two thoughts: the cynic in me thinks that this is a pro-Hilary thing since this is Hollywood after all (although female presidents in future stories is nothing new–go check my review of Top Cow’s Battle Of The Planets for one example), and the other is if any kind of President is involved, then Supergirl will be moving up in the world, which I like to see.

My Thoughts On The DC Rebirth Story

Now before I start I need to make things clear. I am still broke (points to donation links in sidebar) and thus can’t pick up the comics that are part of DC’s “Rebirth” event. So all I know comes from articles, previews, scans_daily, and Comicstorian. So if there is something I’m not aware of then that is why. However, I think I know enough about what’s going on thanks to all of these sources to have an opinion on DC Rebirth. I will now vamp to keep those thoughts off of the homepage, so you have to read the article.

From what I can tell, Rebirth may not be a new continuity. According to the host of YouTube’s Comicstorian DC is simply bringing elements we all liked into this third universe. It’s more 3.1, like Zero Hour was 2.1 or 2.2 or something. I guess that’s good news for fans of the New 52 Youniverse but for the rest of us…actually, mine was killed off by Crisis so I can’t even blame the new crew. If they did go back it would be post-Crisis. My question is what elements are they going to bring back?

Morning Article Link: Ghostbusters: The Next Generation

Who ya' gonna call?

Who ya’ gonna call?

Spinoff Online is reporting that Sony is bringing the busting back to animation, with a new Ghostbusters cartoon set in the future. I wonder if Slimer is still around? I mean, he’s already a ghost.

Trope Shark: Tsundere

While catching up with review shows I missed thanks to my hospitalization (the hospital’s WiFi wasn’t the best and in the convalescent home I was busy with therapy and recovery) I was watching a series of anime reviews by Arkada of Glass Reflections. Many of the reviews brought up the character type “tsundere” enough times thanks to the marathoning that I thought it would make a good installment of Trope Shark, my look at various tropes in media. Even without the medical issues it’s been too long since I’ve written for this series.

The tsundere is a popular trope in “harem anime”. I’ll cover what that is another time but all you need to know for this article is that a harem anime has a protagonist surrounded by many potential love interests, all with some weird quirk that make her (or occasionally him) fun to watch but you may question if the protagonist is better off without any of them. However, tsunderes are not exclusive to harems, or even female characters (for the purposes of my fingers relearning to type I’ll stick with the female pronouns since they’re usually female), and there are versions of them in Western animation as well. So what are they?

Morning Article Link: One Last Day?

It’s not just the fact that they ended the Spider-Marriage (Marvel following DC’s “anti-superhero marriage” policy) that bugs me. I liked that Peter found someone and now tried to make ends meet while maintaining a wife and potentially kids. (Now our “everyman” is Tony Stark or something.) However, Stephen Gerding of Comic Book Resources is seeing hints that the events of One More Day may be coming to an end. Wishful thinking, the Spider-Writers trolling the pro-Spider-Marriage crowd, or is he right?

Chapter By Chapter> Star Wars: Shadows Of The Empire ch. 12

Chapter by Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

Chapter By Chapter Star Wars - Shadows Of The Empire

When last we read, Luke had returned to Ben Kenobi’s to resume his training and lightsaber building while Leia, Lando, Chewie, and Threepio went searching for the party responsible for the price on Luke’s head, not realizing that’s exactly who they were going to talk to. Xizor manipulated Vader to get him out of the way and deal with a rival who happened to be helping the Rebels. And so we continue with our review, with the 12th chapter.
