Internet Spotlight: Comicstorian

Comicstorian logo

I said this would be my next Internet Spotlight. Every now and then I find new things thanks to YouTube’s “related videos” feature. One of those is Comicstorian, dramatic re-tellings of major story arcs and origins, usually from DC and Marvel, but occasionally they branch out. It’s actually connected (I don’t know if it’s an official spinoff) of Eligible Monster, which does the same for video games. I haven’t gone over it so I can’t review it.

They actually produce a few different installments of their show and we’ll look at some examples now.

Morning Article Links: Flagging The Duke Boys

The Confederate Battle Flag has been the source of controversy in recent years. Odd that a flag that is still considered a symbol of the South took so long to become controversial in the debate over race. (Although as Cracked pointed out once the pink triangle used by the gay lobby was once a symbol of oppression by the Nazis over homosexuals.) Considering I do have Southern roots in my grandparents and two of my aunts (one of whom still has her accent after all these years) I do understand the side of those who use the flag as a symbol of something other than hating the n….oh, right, only black rappers are allowed to say that word to each other. Wait, why are THEY saying it as a term of affection? It’s a word meant to insult and divide!

Anyway, since a shooter recently killed people in a predominately black church while draped in the flag, certain groups have pressured businesses to remove any sign of it. (Imagine if he had been dressed as Mario or Luigi? Jack Thompson would be back.) One part of American culture being affected is The Dukes Of Hazzard, since the iconic car, the General Lee, features a Confederate Flag on the roof. Even their merchandise is being removed…by Warner Brothers! Are we going too far or should we ban the flag along with the n wor…oh, right. I guess black rappers will adopt that symbol, too?

Chapter By Chapter: The Black Stallion’s Ghost ch.14 & 15

Chapter by Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

Chapter By Chapter Black Stallion's Ghost

Your mileage may differ from mine if you’re reading along (anyone?) but I’m having trouble getting into this book. We’ve gone from the story of a horse trainer who wants his horse mated with a champion racehorse whether the owner wants to or not to a story where a horse god may or may not exist but the stories are scaring the horse’s owner as he tries to find his horse at midnight in the swamps of Florida. One thing I like about the Weekly Reader Book Club is that it offered numerous styles, but maybe in all the time it took me to finally read this book my tastes have been formed and I can’t get into this book.

Or this wasn’t one of The Black Stallion‘s better installment. We last left our hero in a daze worrying that Kovi the horse god was coming for him. As I read today’s chapter I notice this and the next chapter were so short I might as well combine them.

Chapter 14: The Bridge and Chapter 15: The Way Back
