Chapter by Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.
When we last left our heroes, Leia was being seduced by Prince Xizor for kicks and her friends were trying to escape Darth Vader. The big question is…who is in the greater danger?
This one left me a little dirty but I think it was supposed to. But I’m getting ahead of myself. The cliffhanger with the Millennium Falcon ended rather quickly as Lando was finally able to get the hyperdrive going. It’s not a total letdown to the escape but as a cliffhanger ending it doesn’t quite work. I was expecting it to take more of the chapter than it did; then the escape would have satisfied. Vader sends his troops to attack an alleged Rebel base to continue to push that the stolen plans are not a trap but now he’s back to worrying about Xizor as a threat to the Empire. He should be worried about the threat to his daughter. If he knew she was his daughter.
Because it’s time for the rape! And I don’t care what kind of biological impulse the Falleen have with the pheromones, he’s clearly using them to attempt to rape Leia. It’s just spooky seeing from her point of view as the combination of pheromones and Xizor’s only seductive skills work their dark magic on her. And as we leave the chapter he starts going in for sexy time and she finds herself willingly doing it. It’s disgusting to read, but again I think that’s the point. Throughout the story we’ve seen Xizor manipulate and dominate, drown himself in the fineries of wealth without conscience, and pretty much be a jerk. Are we surprised that he’s also a rapist, especially after earlier learning it was done to him? The man has had a poor upbringing that brought him wealth, sure, but no soul. We’re supposed to hate this guy and this is the ultimate form of this.
Will Xizor succeed in his corruption of Princess Leia? Will Luke finally learn where she is and how to respond? The answers to at least one of these questions will appear in our next chapter. Thankfully I know what happens already or I’d be sick until I read the next chapter.
