Chapter by Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.
In our last get together our heroes tried to sneak their way onto Coruscant to rescue Leia from Xizor, not realizing it’s part of Xizor’s trap (minus the rape hormones–that’s his fun time). How will the trap be sprung and how will it backfire? We still have to get the gang onto the planet. They’re using a robot freighter (that just so happens to be in the area and owned by Xizor’s legit operations) to sneak onto the planet. Will they succeed?
Why am I not surprised that Xizor sleeps with his human replica assassin droid, or that whoever designer her made her…fully functional in certain matters. Xizor would want a sexy girl bot that could kill his enemies and fulfill his more carnal pleasures. So why not invite her into the tub? He’s still convinced Leia will fall for him (even trying to get Leia to join him in the bath…she refused of course) and he wants to be…prepared. Man, this guy is just begging to be killed isn’t he? Even when the Emperor calls hinting that he knows Xizor is trying to get at Luke he thinks everything’s coming up Xizor. He’s got the “coming up” part right anyway.
Meanwhile the Emperor leaves to oversee the Death Star 2 construction, so there must be quite a bit of time between this and Return Of The Jedi because that movies starts with Vader at Endor construction and the Emperor coming to visit.
But the main event of this chapter is Luke and Lando leaving the droids behind at the Falcon in case they need a lift out. And they do note that if Han ever found out…let’s just hope he didn’t later. Using disguises (and of course someone owned Lando a favor and hid their ship for them) Luke and Lando make their way in, eventually stealing Stormtrooper armor and this time Luke finds one his size. I like the banter between Luke, Lando, and the Droids as they got ready to go out, and how Luke and Lando lure the troopers into the ‘fresher (aka the bathroom) to Jedi mind trick them into giving up the armor without causing a noisy scene that would leave blaster or lightsaber marks on the armor. That’s good thinking.
This was a slower-paced chapter by necessity but not one that was boring. Between describing the terrible area they were in and the witty banter Perry managed to make the chapter at least interesting to read. We’ll see what happens next time as Luke and Lando continue their plan to rescue Leia in their usual planning style…by the seat of their pants. 🙂
