I know, I’ve said that snow doesn’t necessarily mean Christmas, but this is a special occasion. How many of you remember the REAL sequel to Rankin/Bass‘ Frosty The Snowman. See, when the company closed down the library went all over the place. CBS wanted a sequel but the rights to Frosty’s Winter Wonderland had gone somewhere else. So they created Frosty Returns, a sequel that resembled the original but really wasn’t. Thanks to Dinosaur Dracula tracking it down online I get to show you this special, since ABC Family barely shows Christmas specials anymore and I don’t think it was ever released on DVD. (The Christmas Classics collection I have carries the original and the CBS sequel.)
And it’s important to the Rankin/Bass Christmasverse as Crystal, the character introduced here, also shows up in the “Christmas In July” theatrical movie that crossed over Frosty and a certain red-nosed reindeer. But we’ll get back to him eventually. Let’s focus on the TRUE Rankin/Bass sequel you may not remember, although I remember when it still aired on TV alongside the original.
