At long last Da Bee is getting his own movie! I’ve looked at the last trailer and there wasn’t a lot to tell there. This time we have a more telling trailer for Bumblebee, the prequel movie about Bee’s early days on Earth. (The movie is set in 1984.) This time it’s Travis Knight instead of Michael Bay on directing duties but since this isn’t a reboot he’s still stuck with what he has to work with from the last five movies. So what are my thoughts on this now? How does he appear to be working around it?
Let’s talk about the big one: the character models. One of the reasons Bay and ILM had the Transformers looking they way they did in robot mode was the thought that the classic designs just wouldn’t work in live-action, and for the most part they were right. However, the robots we got was a collection of metal and robotics with a few vehicle parts on it to match their alt mode and it just didn’t work. Add in the fact that everyone except Optimus, Bumblebee, Ratchet, and Sentinel Prime were vehicles that were as silver, grey, and black as their vehicles and it was nearly impossible to tell them apart, especially when tangling in a fight.
What Knight and I don’t know who is doing the effects (I’m assuming still ILM) did was find a happy medium between the classic forms and the Bay forms. They have unique colors that allow them to stand out and you can tell one from the other. And the few Transformers we can recognize look like their G1 selves but something that might fit live-action and the old designs better. I don’t think that’s Starscream given his place in the movies, but we do have Bumblebee, Optimus Prime, Soundwave, and Ravage looking more like their classic designs. Then again, Soundwave and Ravage look different in the movies, so maybe it is Starscream. But at least you can tell them apart. And they proved Bumblebee could have had his classic alternate mode but Bay wanted to go with something that appeals to his testosterone levels (this is the man who put flames on Optimus), and even took a shot at the classic mode in the first movie.
Also, we’re getting triple-changers for the first time in the movieverse since I don’t see them scanning vehicles as they go from jet to car modes. That’s kind of cool. What isn’t cool is it looks like we have Decepticons working with humans again. Yes, they’re tricking humans who know nothing about Transformers but this was why I rage-quit Age Of Extinction so I’m getting bad vibes here. Of course they may be Autobots and Bumblebee has gone rogue or something in his search for the All-Spark but unless this is a reboot (and after the Bay films I actually wouldn’t mind if it was) I’m a bit skeptical.
So yes, I am still excited to see this movie and if someone wants to give me a Christmas present a trip to the movies and some popcorn would be nice. Or a cute girl who wants to take me on a date for some reason. That would work too. 🙂 I just hope we’ll actually be getting a good Transformers movie, especially since it stars my favorite Autobot (or at least one of his namesakes).
