Chapter By Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.
Last chapter we met the “infamous” Star Colonel Ravill Pryde, who certainly is full of his last name…and a few other terms I can’t use in polite company. The man’s boastful and I guess charismatic but he’s also full of himself considering his war record consists of the Jade Falcon equivalent of an MMA fight with giant robots.
I’m guessing this chapter we’ll find out the results of Joanna’s lack of kissing his backside in the meeting last time. Date and location haven’t really changed so let’s jump into it.
Well, now we get the reason for disparity in Joanna’s rank between the cover and first few chapters. Apparently for some reason she’s being demoted to Star Commander and sent to a facility for the test tube babies. She won’t be a warrior, and she won’t even be training them. Ravill claims these orders came from the Khan (who I guess is one of the important bigwigs in the Clan structure, maybe their version of the commander in chief or at least admiral) but I wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t have a hand in it. If he has the Khan’s ear it would explain at least some of his arrogance. Meanwhile Horse is going to be assigned to work with him, probably because Horse was so close to Adian Pryde and Ravill is really riding the wave of his bloodname. That’s the only reason given Ravill is an anti-freeborn bigot. I guess it’s more important to come out of a vat than a birth canal.
The thing is he’s good at hiding any dislike of Joanna, but he does insist that he could beat her even though she took out five of his best butt-kissers. Maybe by the time the book is over we’ll see if he can back up that claim. Joanna still has a month left before she’s sent off to play wet nurse and this is only chapter seven of 31 and we have an epilogue. I’m guessing something’s going to happen before she’s sent off. As for Diana, no telling what’s happening to her but I would like to see her get involved in the story. As the actual daughter of Adian…oh right, she’s freeborn so even though she got his DNA the old-fashioned way they don’t count it. I want to see them regret that.
We’ll learn if anything’s going to come of that in the future installments. Next time we’ll see how this goes.
