Chapter By Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.
In the last chapter of Robotech Colonel Wolff was grilled over Dana’s escape as politics prevented actual guilty parties in this story from getting what they deserved. Let’s hope the Invid gets them first!
Speaking of “last chapter”, this is the last chapter of this book, with the epilogue coming next week. That means a new book in two weeks. I’m guessing this week will be the last loose ends with the epilogue being a bit of final clean-up or “where are they now” type stuff. Clearly in this version Earth will eventually turn to normal, as released documents that somehow survived the invasion, interviews for biographies, and other media were created after the Regis left Earth for Optera. So let’s see if anything interesting happened in these last days before the pounding.
Three segments in this one. Nova meets with Wolff to talk him into joining the GMP as a liaison with the scattered remains of the Southern Cross to form a resistance net as Wolff proposed. Meanwhile he’ll be setting up in a city called Valhalla. I don’t remember the town where we the audience first met Wolff having a name but it wouldn’t be the first novelization to add details, as evidenced by other novelizations I’ve reviewed in this series. I couldn’t find out which novel adapted the episode but according to the Robotech fandom wiki it was called “Soldertown”. They could have renamed it. Again, I don’t know what novel it appears in.
Meanwhile Misa and Terry say their goodbyes. Odd that Misa still seems to be trying to convince Terry to stay with the Starchildren when she supposedly has a new boyfriend out of nowhere. I don’t know what Luceno was trying to set up here since I know so little about the two outside of a couple random comics I have with Terry in it. I think I stopped caring by this point anyway.
The chapter ends with Kan Shimada and Louie cultivating the Flower Of Life as part of their plan to make friendly with the Invid…in an area that probably wouldn’t have had the Flower growing there if I follow the description of this place. Who wants to wager that by the end of next week’s final installment they get blowed up real good?
So that’s the last official chapter of the book and outside of Wolff and Nova I don’t care about the characters. They ruined Wolff, I know nothing of Shimada and Misa and little about Terry so I’m figuring they’re probably going to die. Well except years later we find Louie along with Admiral Hunter’s group and partially responsible for the Protoculture-hiding shadow tech but the writer couldn’t have known that The Shadow Chronicles was going to happen at the time the book was written and published. Still, be with us next time for “Epilogue”, the final installment (and this is the last time I get to do this bit) in the Chapter By Chapter review of Robotech: Before The Invid Storm.
[…] In the last chapter of Robotech, it actually was the last chapter. It was all about tying up loose ends before the Invid arrived…which makes me wonder what they can even say in this chapter. Was this really needed when you could have just tied all the ends in the chapter or did you really feel the need to have an epilogue? I guess we’re about to find out, as we finish this book. […]
