BW V-Log: Video Plans

BWMS card image 2014

I was going to work on my belated Christmas video review…but have you seen the calendar? It’s February for Pete’s sake! Who wants to watch a Christmas video review in February? So while I save that for it’s proper slot (Christmas Eve) I decided to do a video blog to announce my video goals, including tease some video, and even a couple of art, project I’m hoping to do this year. That I hoped to do LAST year, but we all know why that didn’t happen.

Chapter By Chapter #8 revealed

BW Chapter by Chapter header

Chapter by Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

And this book club is staying in the realms of science fiction. Being what I assumed (falsely perhaps) to be a self-published book, I wasn’t expecting a lot of people to have heard of this. Considering what it goes for on Amazon and Barnes & Noble, however, I’ve rethought that assessment, so please ruin nothing for me. I have read zero of this book. Remember when I talked about my mom trying to read The Black Stallion’s Ghost to me (although circumstances halted that)? We’ll, I had some idea about that book. I’m going into this one completely blind, like the Phantom anthology. Only this one comes from my late mother’s library. My dad wasn’t much of a reader while my mom was a huge reader. She had a lot of books because she didn’t read comics like I do, meaning all her reading material were in prose form. I kind of wish I had kept the Erma Brombeck books because I hear her writing is really funny, but I’ve got a huge stack of my own novels to go through, so that didn’t happen.

However, while I’m using this article series to get to read it I’m going to have to tread a little lighter on this review than I have on others. The writer for this one my mom’s cousin. I don’t remember meeting her (but I have enough trouble keeping track of my own cousins, including two I’ve never met for family reasons, although one of them was a pen pal for awhile) but it does mean I’m technically reviewing family here. (By the way, I said on Sunday that she was a nun. Apparently that’s a different cousin of hers. I refer you to the previous parentheses.) I’m going to be fair, mind you; I’ll praise what I think works and comment on what I think doesn’t, but I’m going to pick my wording a little more carefully than in previous installments. So how many of you have even heard of our next Chapter By Chapter book review topic…..

“Yesterday’s” Comic> Noble A.R.M.O.U.R. Halberder #1

Academy Comics LTD. (January, 1997)

WRITERS/ARTISTS: John & Jason Waltrip

That’s it for credits? Okay…well, here’s some history. This comic was originally solicited as Cyberknights and to be honest this title works better. The Waltrips have shown a quasi-manga style both as writers and artists, especially in the Robotech comics they produced for Eternity and later Academy Comics. When Academy lost the Robotech license I’m assuming they had to find something similar and this is pretty close to that franchise, but going in their own direction. Okay, that’s good enough space for the homepage. Let’s review this.

BW’s Morning Article Link: JoJo’s Live Action Movie

I have never seen more than a few random episodes of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventures during a convention screening but it’s not something that got my attention. However, it has a huge fanbase which may include some of you. Then again, you probably already know that Toho and Warner Brothers are planning to make a live-action version. This has had mixed results when it comes to the Speed Racer and second Godzilla movie (and a lot of problems with the first one), and the adaptation of Ghost In The Shell has been controversial before it even sees a theater screen. However, Tom Speelman of Comics Alliance thinks this one may actually be good.

Sing Me A Story> Band On The Run

Sing Me a Story logo

There are a few reasons I do this article series. One is to demonstrate how a song can tell a regular narrative. Another is because there’s a particular part of the song that’s fascinating when I go to research it. Sometimes the latter comes out of me hearing a line and wanting to know about it. 1973’s “Band On The Run”, from the Paul McCartney & Wings album of the same name, is one of those songs, because I really want to know who Sailor Sam is. But I’m getting ahead of myself.

The song has an interesting history, as this may not be the song they originally came up with. According to Wikipedia (question the source), the McCartneys (his then living wife Linda) and the only other member at the time, Denny Lane (how many times did he deal with Penny Lane jokes after joining Wings?) went to Lagos, Nigeria, to record the album. Why all the way down there instead of a studio in London? It doesn’t say. It does say, however, that Paul and Linda were robbed at knife point, probably thinking they had something more than demos to the song. Paul also assumes they probably recorded over them or something, not realizing they had the only demos for a future gold record hit. That means the song was recreated by memory. But what is the song actually about and who is Sailor Sam? I have the answer…to one of those.
