Sing Me A Story> Band On The Run

Sing Me a Story logo

There are a few reasons I do this article series. One is to demonstrate how a song can tell a regular narrative. Another is because there’s a particular part of the song that’s fascinating when I go to research it. Sometimes the latter comes out of me hearing a line and wanting to know about it. 1973’s “Band On The Run”, from the Paul McCartney & Wings album of the same name, is one of those songs, because I really want to know who Sailor Sam is. But I’m getting ahead of myself.

The song has an interesting history, as this may not be the song they originally came up with. According to Wikipedia (question the source), the McCartneys (his then living wife Linda) and the only other member at the time, Denny Lane (how many times did he deal with Penny Lane jokes after joining Wings?) went to Lagos, Nigeria, to record the album. Why all the way down there instead of a studio in London? It doesn’t say. It does say, however, that Paul and Linda were robbed at knife point, probably thinking they had something more than demos to the song. Paul also assumes they probably recorded over them or something, not realizing they had the only demos for a future gold record hit. That means the song was recreated by memory. But what is the song actually about and who is Sailor Sam? I have the answer…to one of those.

“Yesterday’s” Comic> Transformers: The Movie #1 (Marvel version)

Transformers The Movie #1

This is not going to be a regular review. The Marvel adaptation is rather interesting when compared to the final movie. From what I can tell and recall, the comic is based on an earlier version of the script and model sheets. This leads to some interesting alterations between the movie and this first adaptation that the later IDW adaptation lacked having the benefit of the movie being out for years and thus knowing the final designs and story. So this is less a review than an examination of those differences for the sake of curiosity. I forgot I had done one of these already but having just read that one I think this one is better and I don’t have time to come up with something new. You can see my examinations of issues #2 and #3 here. I’ll be doing the IDW adaptation starting next week I guess, unless I want to revisit those two as well. Plus this is neat for the Patreon posting.

But…they lied. There was another frontier, another nightmare, more Friday’s, crossovers, reboots, and so on and so on. Britt Hayes of Screen Crush goes over 15 movies that told you it was the final movie in the series. Sometimes more than once.

Right. I have this toy and it is NOT that easy to transform. Or keep together. Also, he’s not in this comic.

Five Old Shows I’d Like To See As A Comic (if they do it right for a change)

Underdog

With the recent announcement of an Underdog comic that seems to actually resemble the show (as opposed to that movie I’m still convinced was intended to be based on Krypto The Superdog), I’ve been wondering what other childhood favorites could be brought back as a comic. And then I remember that not-stalgia travels to comics as well. That’s not a quality issue. I’ll be looking at the early MASK issues from IDW over the next few weeks, but why change the race of the main character in a show that is multi-racial already? The MASK team is more racially diverse than the Power Rangers, although the latter has more female members. Personally I would have made it about Scott Trakker growing up and taking over a new generation of MASK agents against a new threat in VENOM’s image, but nobody asks me to write stuff. I still think my Godzilla pitch would be perfect with a little tweaking.

And yet I can’t help but think, if we refrained from the usual “we’ll make it better by changing what fans loved about it” garbage not-stalgia is known for we could end up with something really good. And these shows deserve to be found by a new audience, even if they don’t have the same impact as other shows I grew up with. And I can do racial diversity, too. Look at my first two entries.

“Yesterday’s” Comic> Thundercats: The Return #3

Well, it’s finally time. Issue one had a good idea. Issue two was slightly uncomfortable. But here is issue #3. The writing is good, the art is good, everything else is crap. Time for my rant!

This comic isn’t worthy of my usual “action figure” joke.

The last of the Netflix wing of the Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes is on his way, as the series based on Danny Rand, the Iron Fist, gets a trailer. The page also includes the early teasers and a brief history of the comic. Sadly, he doesn’t appear to be wearing the costume in this trailer. Come on, Netflix, it’s the last hero you have and the only other one who still wears a costume. (Jessica Jones gave hers up and Luke Cage never really had a superhero costume.) Don’t single out poor Daredevil. Otherwise, it’s the first one I’m honestly interested in seeing. And look who doesn’t have Netflix. Seriously, can you make a DVD release sometime?
