BW’s Morning Article Link: The Doctor To Regenerate Again

Doctor Who FCBD 2016

Is this going to be a new thing now where every time a showrunner for Doctor Who leaves he’ll have only two Doctors and the current one will leave with him? Peter Capaldi has announced that he’ll be leaving the show after this next season, after the Christmas special. I’ve only just recently regained access to BBC America so I’ve seen very little of his run (maybe the first few episodes) so I don’t know if he was any good (or at least if I liked him) but this is turning into a trend, or at least a coincidence. Russell T. Davies left the show having only had two Doctors, and his second (David Tennant) left with him.

Oh, and for those on the internet now asking for a female Doctor (especially after Haley Atwell, formerly of Agent Carter, suggested she’d only go on the show AS the Doctor, here’s an old commentary about why the Doctor shouldn’t be a woman. While I’m all for a returning Time Lady (maybe Romana escapes and I mention wanting the Rani back), swapping a gender for some social issue puts politics over story and we’ve already discussed that issue this week. Skin color change I don’t really care about, so black male I’d be fine with. But changing genders? Just how “alien” should we be making our aliens? Hmmm…speaking of commentaries….

And yes, I know about Missy. I don’t care. I blame it on the Master’s “wife” or it’s still stupid.

Celebrities And Culture

Hollywood Sign

This is not a political article, although politics leads to this thought exercise. Namely, celebrities who plan to boycott movies, TV, music, and whatnot to protest Donald Trump, believing that if they can get all the current celebrities, creators, merchandisers, and anyone else connected to media creation to join in, they can force Trump out of office. Personally, while they can afford it, I don’t see enough of the entertainment industry or those who make money from said industry are stopping to make anything for a while. Although if this means Rosie O’Donnell won’t show up on Match Game anymore I can only hope she takes Alec Baldwin with her and they can find somebody who is actually funny to host it.

But this isn’t about their political stance or mine, but this statement by a spokesperson for activist group Refuse Racism.

Asked to elaborate on why the group is targeting Hollywood out of all the industries in the country as their bargaining chip, the spokesperson argued that Hollywood “is, simply put, the base of the entire modern American culture. It is the foundation of the country, so to speak, the glue that’s holding it together. And think about what happens when you destroy the foundation of a house. It comes crashing down, right? Well, that’s exactly what’s going to happen to America unless Donald Trump realizes how real the danger of that actually is, and chooses to step down as President of his own free will. And while we’re on the subject, between you and me – nobody wants Hollywood to stop doing its thing, but this is a necessary move.”

Oh, I’m sure they won’t. They wouldn’t risk being out of the spotlight for too long since they know they can fade away rather easily. But that brings up the question of just how much influence does the entertainment industry actually have on our culture and what actually would happen if Refuse Racism was successful.

BW’s Morning Article Link: WHY Politics In Modern Comics Don’t Work

Hail Hydra

I know politics have been part of comics, for good or not, since the guy above was fighting Hydra instead of praising him. I and most other readers, even Conservative ones, don’t have a problem with that. However, it’s the WAY these views are used that ruin the story. It’s not even the one-sided perspective. James Harrington explains better than I can.

I do have a good example. In one of Matt Fraction’s Iron Man stories (which I reviewed when it came out) he has his villain hired by a cigarette company to make their product more addictive, like this was being written by those Truth ad writers. He then berates and kills them as horrible monsters….DESPITE TURNING PEOPLE INTO LIVING BOMBS USING TECHNOLOGY STOLEN FROM TONY STARK! That still gets me. Oh, and read the comments to Harrington’s article as well. He (as St.Cyril) has an interesting conversation by poster “Woebegone But Hopeful”.
