Jake & Leon #260: Send In The Clowns

Don't mind me. Just clowning...no, I won't do that to either of us.

Don’t mind me. Just clowning…no, I won’t do that to either of us.

With all these news reports of creepers dressing as clowns and scaring people to the point that actual clowns are losing gigs at parties and probably other events, and the anti-clown rhetoric I always see in the internet circles I travel, I thought it would be nice if someone on the internet showed solidarity with the clowns, and especially mimes, the most hated of all. Of course, planet France once again has something that sounds like something on Earth. Next time somebody should send Fizzbin a written memo. Clowns are awesome though.

Things are improving for me around here. I just got cleared by my primary doctor and the blood doctor told me I could get off the blood thinner. In a few weeks I’m hoping to get a clean bill of health from him, and then I just have the visiting nurse monitoring the healing of the hole in my stomach the stoma popped out of, and a few scabs from the robotic surgery. Things are looking up for the first time all year. I’m hoping to get the comic reviews back by November, in time for this year’s installment of the Art Soundoff. If I can pull my focus back to work completely without being tired or worrying about doctors I can get the video stuff started up again as well. Here’s hoping.

Saturday Night Showcase: He-Man & She-Ra Voice Actor Panel

He was calling her "pretty lady" a little while earlier. I wonder if Marlena ever told Adam about the movie Star Wars?

Power-Con is a convention for fans of Masters Of The Universe and Princess Of Power, as well as the shows and comics based on the brother and sister toy lines. While I have never been there,”Pixel Dan” Eardley. who usually reviews the toys, recorded some of the panels. For BW purposes we’re going with the voice-actor panel from the 2016 event.

Attending this year’s panel are Gabe Khouth (Orko from the re-imagined series), Melendy Britt (who did many Filmation shows but for this event we only care about She-Ra), and two out of three cartoon Skeletors: Alan Oppenheimer (the original) and Brian Dobson (the re-imagined). Campbell Lane, from The New Adventures Of He-Man, passed away in 2014 and the original Orko was the late Lou Scheimer. There were also no other version of She-Ra until the current DC comics. I think; I stopped reading that when I still had income.

Friday Night Fights: Ninjas Don’t Need Colors

I’m back in the fight again, kids! Hopefully this is my last hiatus for a long time. Then again, I fear what else 2016 has planned before it completes it’s trip to the lake of fire where it belongs! Yeah, I hate this year.

And since I’m not back to the daily comic reviews yet I have to remember which comics had a decent fight, and we’re still under the “every fight must have a kick” theme this tournament has had. So while I usually avoid fights with death involved because it’s not my normal style, you have to understand my back is against the wall here. Lucky for me it’s not in a trash strewn alley in New York City. Yet.

“Karate Kick” round 10

I keep wanting to have a Karate Kid comic because that’s what the name reminds me of.

BW Morning Article Link: Designing The Super Sons

In ye olden days the adventures of Batman and Superman’s kids having adventures and fighting bad guys were “imaginary stories”, filler tales meant for fun. In the 3rd DC Universe however they actually exist. “Rebirth” is giving Damion Wayne (alias Robin) and Johnathan Kent (alias Superboy #4–I think) their own comic. Newsarama‘s Chris Arrant has an interview with Jorge Jimenez, artist for this series, who goes into how he designed the new Superboy’s outfit as well as what tied him to the Superman family.

Real-Life Super Mario Galaxy

The only time I’ve played Super Mario Galaxy was a game display at Target, but it looks like a lot of fun, and trying to make Mario’s journey to battle Bowser a little more interesting. In this video we see the special effects guys at Corridor Digital attempt to make this into live action for. Following that is the extremely hard work that went into this. They worked hard for this 3+ minute short.

BW’s Morning Video Link: Should Have Taken That Second Language Course

Go from one English-speaking country to another and some words are different. Go to a country that doesn’t speak English at all and the words are very different. I know, that’s obvious. However, some writers or directors take advantage of the average movie-goer in the US only knowing English to make jokes you’d understand if you spoke that language. Tara Marie of Cracked brings us seven such jokes in this video.

Pilot Review: MacGyver 2016

I know, we’re already about three episodes in, but I’ve been…distracted.

I wasn’t a huge fan of the original MacGyver, although I do enjoy watching it when I do see it. Long time readers also know I bought and enjoyed the comic modernizing the show. So I have nothing against a proper reboot. The question of course is whether or not this qualifies.

The original Angus MacGyver was an investigator for the Phoenix Foundation, serving under Pete Thorton and basically saving the world with a Swiss Army Knife. His ability to take ordinary objects and use them to escape a dangerous situation or stop the bad guys have earned him a place in pop culture and “pulling a MacGyver or some similar phrase is used for anyone who does that. The original series pretty much invented “life hacking”. So how does the new series fare? Going by the first episode there are some adaptation hiccups but overall I rather like the new show.
