He-Man, Orko, and Man-At-Arms go to see the Sorceress, who tells them that the shard is the “Shard Of Darkness”, a piece of the Shakarran Crystal, a giant crystal that good and evil fought over a long time ago. The crystal was destroyed, but shards remain. The Sorceress wants to remerge the crystal and send it to another dimension, a task He-Man must make alone. However, like Orko, He-Man finds himself being drawn to the power the Shard holds. The crystal draws him to Snake Mountain, where Evil-Lyn has been getting Trapjaw and Tri-Klops in on her plan, and the issue ends with her confronting He-Man!
What they got right: Will the hero be tempted to turn to the dark side? It’s a good plot and since this was early in this version of He-Man’s existence, an interesting question to follow. The art is beautiful, and the backstory of the Crystal works for the plot. I’m guessing even the Sorceress doesn’t know about its corrupting influence.
What they got wrong: The rest of the exposition. I’m guess they wanted to clue readers who haven’t seen the show in on the history of Grayskull and the Sorceress (or at least what the writers had come up with or put into the story thus far), but it’s just so obvious. They try to work it into conversation and it’s better than some conversation exposition I’ve seen but still pretty obvious it’s more for the readers than the characters.
Recommendation: So far I’m still enjoying this series. Worth giving a read, at least this far out. Hopefully the trend continues through the end of the arc.
