Form Blazing Sword! (filler video)

Voltron (Modern) #1

I need a little more time to properly research DC’s “Rebirth” thing so I thought this would be cool. The webseries Man At Arms, which I’ve brought up on this site before, has done 80s shows in the past, but this is a first for the “Reforged” team at Baltimore Knife & Sword, which I’ve also shown off in the past. Actually, it’s more than one first, as they take on Voltron’s Blazing Sword…with an added tweak. And just in time for the new Netflix reboot that I can’t watch because I can’t afford Netflix. (Unemployed, remember. *points to donation link in sidebar*)

Morning Article Link: That Time Muhammad Ali Fought Superman

Superman vs. Muhammad Ali

Just before my return to writing boxing legend Muhammad Ali passed away, having fought Parkinson’s Disease for years right up to the end. However, one of his most favorite media fights is a comic where he boxed a temporarily de-powered Superman. It’s rather famous and other blogs have discussed it (I personally have never read it) but CBR’s Alex Duben brings us the history. And Mike Tyson got his own animated series while Ali only had a pilot. Oh, I’ll tell you about that someday.

Getting Caught Up On The New Ghostbusters

Let me state this right now. I like the original Ghostbusters movie. I even liked the sequel despite some major problems I have with it that keeps me from watching it nearly as much as the first movie. I’ll watch it if it’s on and there’s nothing else to watch but I’d rather watch the first movie However, I was more drawn to The Real Ghostbusters (one of the flaws of the second movie being ignoring this) as it explored the characters more, like learning Egon began looking into the supernatural because the Boogeyman used to pop out of his closet as a kid. I also wanted to see a team-up with Filmation’s Ghostbusters but that didn’t happen. Child me is still sad about that.

So with this in mind, let’s look at the new Ghostbusters, the all-female team, and the controversy surrounding it. I’ll point to James Rolfe’s history of why a third movie with the original team failed to happen (mostly Bill Murray not wanting to do it, although I think he did the recent video game). It’s quite interesting to see the behind-the-scenes at getting something like this together. Instead we end up with a reboot of the franchise, and you know my issue with those. So what’s the REAL problem here?

Morning Article Link: Robo Force Virtual Trading Cards

Robo Force fake wrapper

I’m not the only one who took time off for the winter. Although mine was forced and Shawn Robare of Branded In The 80s got back to work a whole lot sooner. And with him he brought a set of digital trading cards for a toyline that didn’t have them in the 1980s…Robo Force. It was an odd toyline which had circular robots with suction cup bottoms, with of course a hero and villain team. I wonder, if Transformers and GoBots hadn’t come along would this line have earned more staying power?

Chapter By Chapter> Star Wars: Shadows Of The Empire ch. 11

Chapter by Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

Chapter By Chapter Star Wars - Shadows Of The Empire

So where were we?

For those of you new to the party, before my medical hiatus we were reading the above book, Steve Perry’s Star Wars: Shadows Of The Empire. Set during the time between The Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi, the story we’ve seen an attempt by our heroes to rescue the carbonite-frozen Han Solo from Boba Fett. It didn’t go well. It went worse when an R2 unit took control of an X-Wing and tried to kill Luke. The unit was later destroyed to hide the evidence by the assassin, who was killed by Wedge when she decided to take Luke out herself, and not to dinner.

The problem comes from Prince Xizor, a Falleen who has a vendetta against Darth Vader. Leader of the organization Black Sun and playing both sides of the war to benefit his group and side with the winners, Xizor wants to be the Emperor’s hand after Vader. (If only he had heard of Mara Jade, but that’s for another time.) He also has a personal score against Vader because the Sith Lord wiped out his family. Xizor himself also relishes the power and “respect” that comes with leading Black Sun and has no compassion for anybody, trusting only his assassin droid, the human-resembling Guri. And now that we’re caught up it’s time to get back to our review.

It was almost true. ComicsAlliance‘s Luke Brown reports that the Aliens movie franchise almost had a Saturday morning cartoon called Operation Aliens.

Jake & Leon #275: Back To Work

Look who’s posting again!

Hey, if you can't make fun of your annoying medical woes why have a comic?

Hey, if you can’t make fun of your annoying medical woes why have a comic?

It’s been a while, hasn’t it? Of course, I’ve already explained why in depth. As for the bag in question, I’m still hoping to lose that in September, which will include another hiatus, possibly including the strip’s next anniversary. Not that there will be a lot to talk about considering how much time I’ve lost.

I’m also making up for lost time over at The Clutter Reports. The project I was hoping to start back in January begins now. A little late, but the stack of paper only grew while I was in the hospital for a few months total.

As for the posting this week, there will be no comic reviews just yet. While I was gifted comics by a friend and by my cousin, plus the ones I have sitting out for the next week of reviews (left over from before I was sick) I can’t get back into my comic longboxes because they’re rather heavy and I have to dig through to find some of the comics to review for the following week. As soon as that’s not an issue I’ll be able to resume those, but maybe NEXT week I can go over the gifted comics and maybe go over my ComiXology digital list, which I picked up during a special offer plus a bunch of freebies. I’ll decide next week but this week I’m just happy to get back to the longer stuff.

In preparation, however, I’ve decided to move the posting of the Morning Article Link (also returning this week) and the nighttime commentaries to 6 ET, AM and PM respectively. The comic reviews go up at midnight and noon and I think this balances out the posting times better. It was that or move the comic reviews to the 1s. So, prepare for more of my ramblings. I also want to get the last two convention videos, a panel on female Marvel characters and possibly the last press junket recording I’ll be making until I qualify for ConnectiCon’s press pass again, done this month. I WILL be attending ConnectiCon on Saturday thanks to the aforementioned cousin really wanting to go (and possibly because of everything I’ve gone through this year) so I hope to get the indie creators interviews this year and a few panels, plus the cosplayer video, but that will probably be it. Say hi if you see me. And now finally back to work.
