BW’s Daily Article Link: Who Owns The Marvel Movie Rights?

When Marvel was trying to get something out of their product during the bad times of the 90s they ended up licensing their characters to different movie studios, with admittedly mixed results. Now creating Marvel Studios and later being own by Disney they now have their own cinematic universe, even basically coining the term. However. some of those rights still belong to other movie studios even if they aren’t using them, Universal! Slashfilm breaks down who currently has the rights to which Marvel heroes and why Spider-Man’s presence in the MCU is volatile. Note that this deal is also why Peter is missing so much of his proper iconography outside of his costume and powers.

Jake & Leon: Best Of Year 12

 

What started as some fun art practice turned into an opener for weekly comic reviews, then when the reviews went daily the opener for links to other articles–and then THOSE went daily, so I just gave the Sundays to Jake & Leon. The comic is sometimes extra commentary, sometimes fun parody, and sometimes just me goofing around and playing with drawing. We’re entering the 13th year of the comic, which is still amazing for me despite not being my dream project and with all the medical interruptions the past few years. I’ve seen my talent grow, shifting from paper to pixel, and just doing something fun. I even got to make a new logo this year for the 500th strip, and the fact there WAS a 500th strip was a feat in itself, not only because of what 2021 did to me but that I managed to keep interested in it that long.

As per usual, it’s time to look back at the previous year. Despite operations (again) and other sick leave problems I think I managed to produce enough strips this year to have some favorites. So let’s look through the adventures and commentaries of Jake, Leon, Max, Bill, Meredith, Beth, and Fizzbin and find the comics I’m most proud of this past year’s time. Some win for something I did making it, some for the gags, and some just because even now I really liked it.

BW’s Daily Videos: Ken Penders’ Sonic Time

NOTE: Quite a bit of cursing in this one.

My view on Ken Penders’ run is mixed. There were some general ideas he liked, especially his take on Knuckles that I guess makes sense seeing as this video says it came from an original idea he just tied the echidnas to. On the other hand there was a lot I didn’t like. The mad king, his treatment of Sally, Geoffrey St. John became so annoying I outright hated him. You’ll find some of the Penders run in reviews I made when the comics came out and I do plan to review all the other issues I have, and maybe even revisit those comics I did review, at the next opening after I finish the TRS-80/Tandy Computer Whiz Kids in “Yesterday’s” Comic. I’m wondering what will happen when I revisit the comic but I will pay more attention to when he takes over now than I did back then.

The part where he sued Archie to take complete control of his work and screw up the continuity I’m definitely not a fan of. I stopped reading when I decided they might never end the Mecha-Sally nonsense, so when they rebooted the Archie Sonicverse at the end of the second Mega Man crossover, that was a good time to just drop the title. Mega Man however I kept reading until I lost my job.

Jake & Leon #506: Return Of The Super Brothers

Still pushing my plan to bring young Jon back.

I already commented on this situation. As for Superman (I’m not sure which one) dropping “…the American Way” for “…a better tomorrow”, are you really surprised at this point? These are not people who understand or even care about the “big blue boy scout”, so I’m sure putting more of an “edge” to Superman is another reason they’re trying to push Clark aside for Jon. They can’t connect to Superman as he is so this is their latest attempt to make a Superman they can relate to…because apparently they aspire to nothing.

Over at The Clutter Reports this week, my own work came second to helping my aunt out.

Here at the Spotlight this week it’s the Jake & Leon anniversary post. That’s tomorrow, so the Chapter By Chapter continuing review of Star Trek: Prime Directive will drop on Tuesday instead. Meanwhile I really want to get that Finally Watched in on Godzilla Vs. Kong having posted their first meeting yesterday. We’ll see how lucky we are there. I’m not sure what else is coming this week but hopefully it will be worth your time. Have a good week!

Saturday Night Showcase: King Kong Vs. Godzilla

I’m going to assume that this is one of those licensing YouTube channels, but it does give me a chance to air a Godzilla movie. I haven’t been able to do that since Vodpod closed down.

King Kong Vs. Godzilla is the third movie in the original Godzilla series. The Big G is still a bad monster at this point but thus far people love to see him fight other monsters, so why not the other big name giant monster out there? For a full look at the history of this movie I recently posted a video by Patrick Gavin for Monstrosities going over the full history of the movie. The US version ditches some of the humor and adds unnecessary American footage of some unnecessary UN reporters. There’s also an article on the Godzilla fanwiki that goes over more of the changes.

This version is the US edit, posted to YouTube by Star Entertainment English, an Indian company that appears to license movies. It features a few classic movies and a bunch of b-movies. Enjoy.

UPDATE: 10/7/2023 That one went down for some reason. The current post comes from a different channel and at this point I’m afraid to list them.
