Jake & Leon #457: Herodude & Enemies #1

I think we all need something silly about now.

I’ve been wanting to actually have Jake and Max do a Herodude & Enemies story since I came up with this a whole lot of strips ago, but other discussion topics kept coming up. With the entertainment industry still under the death plague quarantine even as they start coming back to work It seemed like a good time. Goodness knows I’ve let other current events have too much of a foothold on this comic. So I hope you enjoy the bit.

Meanwhile over at The Clutter Reports I prepped the comics I want to get rid of to finally be listed over at the Clutter For Sale section of my site. Keep an eye on that. You may find a comic you’re interested in, or you could also check out the other items up for grabs. I try to be reasonable with best offers but I do find out what these things are actually worth. Remember, I want to clean this clutter out, but I’m also unemployed and need the money.

As for the rest of this week, the new Chapter By Chapter book starts this week with Doctor Who: The Time Travelers. The last physical Scooby-Doo comic I have yet to review will be reviewed, though I still have that huge digital library thanks to the Scoob! promotion. We’re also nearly caught up with all of my Marvel Universe comics so I’ll need something new for Tuesday very soon. I think I know what though. And the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine comic this week (don’t worry, the Enterprise-D will be popping up again soon) is actually written by Sarek himself. (I hope it works better than the time Apollo wrote a Battlestar Galactica comic, as seen in the “Liefeld’s Galactica” reviews.) I’m not sure what else is coming up in articles, but I’ll try to make the week interesting. Have a good week, folks!

Saturday Night Showcase: Super Comics Challenge

Longtime BW readers know the name Jerzy Drozd, co-host of the Lean Into Artcast and co-founder of the Art Soundoff Challenge podcast I take part in every November with other comic creators. (Mine is in v-log form.) It was Jerzy, along with Mark Rudolph and their podcast Art & Story, that restarted my creative energies after someone at the Transformers newsgroup I was part of linked to their interview with Transformers Animated art director Derrick J. Wyatt. This is why Jerzy is also referred to as the BW Virtual Mentor. Being friends with Jerzy is easy. Have a love of comics, a desire to create and promote the medium, and think the idea of Sgt. Slaughter riding Battlecat would be totally awesome. So we are friends. I’ve also reviewed a number of his comic productions and co-productions over the 11 years this site has existed.

Jerzy has started up a new project along with some fellow cartoonists, a cartooning game show called Super Comics Challenge as he and co-host Gerimi Burleigh challenge three creators to a series of challenges. In this pilot young creator Elisabeth, colorist Aaron Polk, and comic writer/artist Greg Schigiel are tasked with three different challenges (okay, I’ve used that word enough in this paragraph and I wasn’t even trying) for glory and fun. Enjoy!

Superman: Man Of Tomorrow Trailer Drops

Let’s see. I could just post the trailer as a Daily Video and move on. But it’s Superman and I’m me so the heck with it!

Superman: Man Of Tomorrow is an upcoming direct-to-video animated movie that brings a younger Superman to Metropolis. How this fits into the more recent New 52 inspired movies I couldn’t tell you. For one thing I didn’t watch any of them (yet) and for another this one isn’t out yet so I can’t very well compare it to anything. With a new trailer out I am curious how well they’re going to tell Superman’s early years. More recent attempts in the comics (who thought letting Frank Miller write a story about Clark Kent’s road to Supermandom was a good idea?) haven’t really worked out. Superman is supposed to be the aspirational hero, who becomes a champion of justice because of his upbringing and not some tragedy in his life. As Professor Geek has said Superman doesn’t become aspirational, he is aspirational and just has to learn how to inspire good in others. Will this movie get that right? Let’s see what it wants us to believe.
