BW’s Morning Video: The Secrets Of Spider-Man’s Web Shooters

Catch more Comic Drake on his YouTube channel.

There was also a “burning webbing” in one of the Spider-Man video games, meant to weaken symbiotes like Venom and Carnage (I think Venom was the one he used it on in the game) that I’m surprised nobody thought to bring into the comics.

The Many Failures Of DiDio’s DC

This was the logo DiDio promoted. I don’t know for sure he was a fan of it, but it’s as lame as his tenure.

Based on current goings on I had considered naming this article “Dan DiDio (Or The Fabulous Emancipation Of One DC Universe)” but that both seemed in poor taste and date the article even more than the topic.

Yes, you heard right. Apparently Dan DiDio is no longer going to be the co-publisher at DC Comics. Whether he was fired, left on his own, or had a mutual parting of ways, most of us don’t really care. We’re just glad he’s gone. DiDio showed little understanding or interest in the DC Universe that fans of the comics loved so much, drove off creators, and didn’t seem to care what the readership thought. It led to the loss of longstanding imprints, the creation of new ones, and decisions that ran more people off than it brought in. He’s done a lot of damage but with luck a replacement might fix those problems.

However, there’s the problem and why we don’t really have an opening to celebrate. DiDio is gone, but that doesn’t mean DC fans are immediately in the clear. He left a lot of damage behind and while we don’t have a replacement announced, or even know if Jim Lee is or isn’t going to work alone, this leaves the future of DC Comics and the DC Universe in question.

BW’s Morning Article Link: The School Comic Book Club

There were some fun school activities when I went to school, like model building, creative writing, computers, photography, picking on Troy…wait, that one wasn’t so fun because I was the Troy in that situation. Anyway I would have loved to have seen a comic book club so congratulations to one Kansas school who gets to live a fantasy I didn’t even know was possible. Of course, if they were MAKING comics it would be even cooler. We’ve seen comic stores trying to create a new generation of comic creators and with all the writing and art clubs we had in school it would be a nice bonus.

Jake & Leon #444: DiDio Departs DC

Or maybe Jim Lee remains sole publisher. Do we know he would change anything?

I’ll get more into this in a commentary tomorrow (because it fits with the Monday DC Comics review, so expect Chapter By Chapter on Tuesday this week), but I’m not ready to celebrate simply because Dan DiDio is now leaving DC Comics, whether he was fired or left on his own. The problems are still there, 5G is still happening, and the future of the DC Universe is not necessarily brighter. Marvel wasn’t better when Quesada was kicked upstairs, or when Axel Alonzo was replaced by CB Cebulski. I’ll celebrate when the DC Universe is back to being the DC Universe.

Over at The Clutter Reports this week I organized a box full of junk. Exciting.

In addition to the above listed schedule alteration we have another installment of Art Of Storytelling, where we’ll talk a bit about stage plays. It’s not a topic I get to discuss and I expect I’ll get into why, but it is a form of storytelling. There will be another commentary or two, and it all depends on what else breaks this week. Hope you enjoy the ride!

Saturday Night Showcase: Dragon Ball R&R

Since I talked about audio dramas last night I though tonight I could actually bring you one. Instead of going to another one from the old radio days I opted for something new and fan-created. This one is rather imaginative but it started as something else.

Lawrence Simpson, better known by his screen name MasakoX, is famous online for his role as Goku and Gohan on the now ended Dragon Ball Z Abridged, but that’s not his only connection to Dragon Ball fandom. On his own channel he has produced numerous videos talking about the series and both examining characters and themes as well as going over the history of the franchise both in an out of universe. Every now and then he has also created a series of “what if” scenarios, some of them going from multiple chapters, in which an event is altered and a new timeline is formed, one wildly different from the official stories by Akira Toriyama. Minor changes like Goku not learning his signature Kamehameha Wave technique or never meeting a minor character has on occasion created an entire new series of events which has on occasion lead to worse or even better scenarios for your favorite characters.

One of those scenarios is “What If Raditz Turned Good?“, where Goku and Gohan somehow manage to reform Raditz instead of sending him to…another dimension. Or HFIL or whatever explanation you prefer. He’s dead either way in those scenarios but in this one Raditz works alongside his brother Goku, marries forgotten character Launch and has a daughter named Ranch who ends up having adventures of her own with cousin Goten and family friend Trunks. Instead of using the DBZA actors of Team Four Star, Masako opted to bring in new actors who just wanted to play both the famous characters and the ones that formed in his alternate reality, though he still plays Goku and Gohan. The show became known as Dragon Ball R&R, and tonight I bring you the first episode from this alternate reality. The video contains an animated intro with images depicting the scene acted, but it’s an audio drama so you don’t have to watch it to enjoy it, but in some of the fights it does admittedly help. Join the kids and their fathers (minus Vegeta, who doesn’t care for Raditz) as they play a game of musical fusions to see who has the strongest fusion.
