The day the cow people invaded!

Billy Batson & The Magic of Shazam! #17

DC Comics/Johnny DC (August 2010)

WRITERS: Art Baltazar & Franco
ARTIST: Mike Norton
LETTERER: Travis Lanham
COLORIST: Zac Atkinson
EDITOR: Chris Conroy

Just want to give a quick shout-out to “mdtk” over at the DC message boards. He’s been linking to my Billy Batson reviews. (No love for Batman: TBATB.) Thanks for the readership. 😀 Also, when I skim the page the link comes from, it’s nice to see older readers who aren’t afraid to read a “kids” title because it’s such a good comic, probably the most “pure” superhero comic on the shelves right now. Keep pushing the good stuff, guys! There’s not enough of it coming out.

Billy and Mary tag along when Helen investigates cow disappearances outside of the city. One farmer has gone so far as to dress his cows in clothes in hopes of keeping the aliens from stealing them. In fact, an alien IS stealing cows, but it’s because he thinks they’re the intelligent lifeforms behind cheeseburgers (well, he’s almost right).

What they got right: While the Wizard’s disappearance (still against that) isn’t forgotten, we get a nice one-shot stand alone story. Not something we see in this era of story arcs. It’s fun, a little bit silly without being over the top for the series, and it just made me happy.

What they got wrong: Cows are female, so why are they all wearing male clothes? OK, OK, I really didn’t have anything for this issue. I like comics where I can’t find anything wrong. Even the cover is well done, and what I wish more comic cover artists would consider (mainly portraying what the story is about instead of some kind of pin-up poster) when making covers.

Recommendation: It’s obvious why part of this story appeared in this year’s Free Comic Book Day sampler. As a stand alone story it still gives you the best idea of what the series is like with this writer and art team on board. If you need a “jumping on” point for this series, here it is. Get hopping!

Translator device? What's that?

Deep down, we all knew it.

  1. […] Something has been stealing cows just outside of Fawcett City and leaving crop circles behind. Billy and Mary Batson investigate with reporter Helen Fidelity and her cameraman and happen to be there when the cows are suddenly lifted into the sky. Are aliens involved? The story continues in Billy Batson & The Magic Of Shazam! #17. […]
