I once posted a video where the creator of the first black hero, Lobo (not the guy you’re thinking of; this was a cowboy), showed up at the Brass City Comic Convention. However, the first black superhero is even more obscure, or maybe you’ve heard of Lion Man? Well the Washington Post posted an article about him, but when I tried to read it the site insisted I was in private browsing mode (I was not) and wouldn’t let me read it. So here’s Ari Green of Four Color Media Monitor calling out some of the writer’s comments in the article. Maybe fix your website next time.

Remember that newspaper article I showed you about the creator of Lobo? Lobo was a great comic book which highlighted the role of African Americans in the U.S. West during the 19th century. Lobo was a high quality, historical comic book series. We need to see more high quality, historical comic books be produced in the current comics market.
In honor of Black History Month, you should post up that video again of Lobo’s creator at the Brass City Comic Convention.

Ace Harlem, Lion Man, and others were some of the earliest U.S. black comic book heroes in this one shot comic book issue printed back in 1947.
I wonder if Haiti had earlier comic books with black characters before 1947? Possibly.
