BW Morning Article Link> The Murderers Of Saturday Morning

Those of us who grew up before the 2000s (or possibly late 1990s) have fond memories of getting up every Saturday morning not having to worry about school and enjoy a block of network TV just for us kids. Heck, shows that actually existed in weekday syndication (where we dealt with homework and mom’s stupid soap operas where adults were kissing a lot in their underwear or going on about boring stuff) still get called “Saturday morning cartoons” when they clearly weren’t. We need to fix that by the way. Nowadays however, the networks have abandoned ANY kid-friendly show unless it’s the holidays or a fluke.

This is a recurring topic here at the Spotlight since I loved SatAM shows. So here’s yet another article as to what happened to that programming block, as kids TV has now been shoved to a small group of stations, most of which require a higher tier cable or satellite package to even see. I think parent groups should get the blame as well, since they were the ones who insisted kids must have education pounded into their skulls 24/7 and only grown-ups get to watch something fun. Although there are days I wonder who needs educational TV more, the kids or their parents?

Free Comic Inside: How Wonder Woman SHOULD Un-Mind Control Superman

Free Comic Inside logo

While I maybe should have waited for the Wonder Woman movie, this one is a bit smaller to really make the jump onto the bandwagon, so that’s out. However, it works for our current event of Wonder Woman being kicked out of the UN because she’s attractive and used to have an outfit that showed it off. (Apparently the people who protested her hasn’t seen what she wears these days. Not as much cleavage, but that won’t stop the new brand of body shaming, although we haven’t exactly ditched the old brand. Body shaming is wrong no matter who the target is.) After all, the Super Powers Collection mini comics are rather short even by mini comic standards.

I got a surprise on this one, though. Remember when Maxwell Lord turned evil and took mental control of Superman to make superheroes look bad, and how Diana put a stop to that? Well, we have that same scenario here, only replace Max with Brainiac…and it’s not the last time Superman gets mind-controlled in this mini comic series. I know we’ll see it again when we look into Doctor Fate’s comic. So how does the kid-friendly 80s version of the amazing Amazon free her friend? Actually, the current DC team wouldn’t have minded that, either.

BW’s Morning Article Link: Santa In Comics

http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/143754974

One last bit of Christmas before we go. Jolly old St. Nicholas has had his appearances in comics. Benito Cereno of Comics Alliance brings you a list of some of them, because a full list would be really long for their video and extra notes article. Sadly no mention of Captain Yuletide so I fixed that in the comments. 🙂

That Time Deadpool Fought Pinkie Pie. Not Even Kidding.

I’m not what you’d call a “brony”. I’ve watched My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic before and I probably will again, but I’m not a die-hard fan. It is a fun little show that somehow managed to surpass it’s (thankfully still) intended audience of little girls who buy plastic ponies with brushable hair. Although now they apparently have battle vehicles or am I the only one who has seen that ad? I have, however, watched enough of it to have a favorite among the “Mane Six”, and it’s Pinkie Pie, the party-crazy one who just wants to bring fun and laughter to everyone. I’d say we’d need more of that but honestly one Pinkie Pie is more than anypony can handle on a regular basis.

Screw Attack’s Deathbattle series seems to be an odd place to put her in. If your new to this series (which I first learned about when Superman fought Goku and I could have sworn I posted that but it doesn’t look like I did) imagine combining Celebrity Deathmatch with Deadliest Warrior but with more thought put into which fighter would win. Even odder is the opponent chosen for the keeper of the element of laughter, the ultra-violent “merc with a mouth”, Deadpool. I guess it’s based on the fact that both have played games with the fourth wall (Deadpool’s broken the fourth wall so many times I’m surprised Linkara can still stand atop it), but it still sounds like something you’d expect on April Fools Day, not just around Christmas.

So what happens when the crazy assassin goes up against the ultimate party pony? Even the hosts, Wiz and Boomstick, aren’t ready for this one, kids.

BW’s Morning Article Link: Carrie Fisher Passes Away

carrie-fisher-rip

I mentioned it during yesterday’s Chapter By Chapter review of course, but in case you missed it, Carrie Fisher, mostly known for playing Princess Leia Organa in the Star Wars franchise, passed away over the weekend, the aftermath of a heart attack suffered earlier in the week during a plane flight. It’s a bad time for the franchise given Abram’s current sequel, but it’s never a good time for her family and friends, who miss her more than you ever will. So please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Chapter By Chapter> Star Wars: Shadows Of The Empire chs. 35 & 36

Chapter by Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

Chapter By Chapter Star Wars - Shadows Of The Empire

I would be remiss if I didn’t start this review with some bad news concerning this franchise. Reports are coming in that Carrie Fisher, who played Princess Leia in this franchise, passed away today. Considering her character is kind of needed for the new stream of sequels it’s a blow to the franchise, and to the fans. However, please please PLEASE remember that it’s worse for her family and friends, and they don’t just see her as Princess Leia, but as someone they personally know and love. There was more to her than the one character, and show some respect to Fisher personally and to her loved ones. Princess Leia will live as long as the franchise, including in the book we’re about to get back to. More stories can be made about her in novels and comics, and it’s not the first time a new actress took on a role if they really needed the character, as poor form as that would be at this point. Carrie Fisher has died, and that’s the loss to be mourned as 2016 takes out yet another celebrity. (I just read the author of Watership Down was announced as dying today as well.)

Speaking of Leia, we left her in the clutches of a man who thinks sexual-arousing pheromones is foreplay and Stockholm Syndrome is romantic seduction, which is not a place we want to come back to given today’s tragedy but here we are. However, Luke, Lando, and Dash have a plan to rescue her if daddy Vader doesn’t screw it up despite wanting his own shot at giving Xizor the Darth Maul treatment. And since again we have a chapter lasting barely three pages we’ll be looking at two chapters today. Let’s see how that goes.
