Sing Me A Story: Parents Just Don’t Understand

Before Will Smith was known as an actor that used to make good project choices (what happened to you, man?) he was the royal named rapper of the duo “DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince”. They’re fun style of hip hop even did well with audiences not usually drawn to the genre and started a new craze. It led Smith to get his own show, The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air, in which Jeff had a recurring role as Will’s best bud Jazz. It was their second single off of the He’s The DJ, I’m The Rapper album that was probably the most responsible.

“Parents Just Don’t Understand” features two tales of the Fresh Prince showcasing how his parents didn’t quite get him or the usual “you forgot when you were teenagers” argument. The unusual presentation drew you in and inspired the look of the show’s intro, but of course that doesn’t matter on the radio. How well do the lyrics themselves tell these stories?

Chapter By Chapter #18 Revealed

It may be hard to remember thanks to how long the previous book was and all the sick leaves, but there was a time when I was trying to decide between three books, all of them based on a popular series. The first was a Doctor Who novel that won the poll because my time lord-loving friend was the only one who voted. (This is what I mean about polls being a waste of time for me to put up.) The second we just finished, based on the BattleTech franchise. Thus it is time for the third and final book, and it’s a Star Trek book. Because I have a lot of Star Trek novels. It’s probably the longest series of novels in my prose collection, and I don’t even own close to all of them.

The last time I reviewed a Star Trek novel it was slightly disappointing. Enterprise: The First Adventure told a possible story of Kirk’s first mission as Captain of the USS Enterprise and every character who got a back story was a sad, depressing one. Nobody joined Starfleet because they always dreamed of going into space or had skills that would be useful elsewhere. Everybody had some bad event or grew up someplace they wanted to escape as their primary motivation. The story itself was imaginative but just felt kind of weird I guess. I did a book review for The Clutter Reports and it links back to that series of Chapter By Chapter reviews. Will this one be better? Honestly going by the back cover description I have concerns, and only the fact that our co-authors are very familiar with this series gives me any hope. I’ll explain as we discuss our next Chapter By Chapter book review….

“Yesterday’s” Comic> Green Lantern Corps #1

ComiXology doesn’t allow me to auto-sort comics by the date they were originally released, so these DC digital reviews are going to bounce all over the timeline. Sorry about that.

Jake & Leon #490: Memory Loss

The annoying part is this sliver of the idea is still hanging there taunting me. If I could remember what inspired it….

Not the first time, sadly won’t be the last.

Over at The Clutter Reports this week we have the final book report for BattleTech: I Am Jade Falcon. Tomorrow we’re breaking out the last book in our little trio, so stay tuned for that intro article.

So I’ve come to a decision about the DC Comics. I’ve reviewed all the physical comics but there are quite a few digital comics left in my comiXology library so I’ve decided to review them and keep DC Monday going a while longer. In order to not have digital comics dominating my reviews I’m going to drop the Saturday library review and put some of my non-DC/Marvel comics not yet reviewed there. I’ll still keep the big series in reserve for when I fully run out of DC and Marvel main universe stuff or the other series I’m going through (Robotech, Star Trek, Scooby-Doo) but there’s plenty of shorter series and one-issue stuff to go over. That will be the daily comic review arrangement going forward. As for this week’s articles, we’ll all find out together as I’m getting tired of plans falling through and I don’t even know what I’m going to be able to do Tuesday thanks to various factors (which will probably affect Wednesday if not Tuesday night). Have a good week everyone!
