The Many MANY Intros Of Transformers: Car Robots In Disguise

While they were waiting for Beast Machines to be completed so they could bring it over, Takara decided to produce their own Transformers line, called Car Robot. (The name is an homage to one of the Diaclone sublines.) It featured new and old molds (many really old) for the Cybertrons and Destrons and was kind of Beast Machines in reverse. Instead of heroic Maximals versus evil Vehicons it brought back the Autobots and Predacons to do battle, just under their Japanese names. Later the Predacons would get vehicle allies, which led to the return of Decepticons. It’s a transition between the waning “Beast Era” and the return of vehicles, although outside of the movie line all you got were vehicles and the occasional robotic animal. Outside of Beast Wars homages the organic animal alt mode are pretty much dead.

Meanwhile, after Beast Machines Hasbro had planned their own vehicular line but continuing the continuity unlike Car Robot, which was the start of a brand new continuity. I find that odd given their comics usually continued the G1/Beast continuity. There have been other continuities since but Japan hasn’t really let that go. Hasbro’s idea however was to be called Transtech, and while it also would bring back vehicles the idea was to make technorganic vehicles, much like the Maximals of Beast Machines. For whatever reason the idea was scrapped. (My guess is they couldn’t figure out how to take the story in this direction.)

To make up for the time needed to create a replacement line and wanting a new main series Hasbro opted to just import Car Robot as a sort of filler line called Robots In Disguise, an homage to the line from the classic theme song. (The toy package slogan was “more than meets the eye”.) While they would thrown in a few reused molds of their own (I’ll get to those someday over at The Clutter Reports) they were the same reissued and new molds of Car Robots. Of course, Hasbro would bring the name back for yet another line in the 2010s but we aren’t there yet, as well as IDW using the name for one of their Transformers comic series just to add to the confusion. Each show only had one intro, which is easier on me. This should be a short one.

BW’s Art Soundoff 2019 #1: Once More Unto The Brink

The History Of The War Of The Worlds Video Games

Everybody has their own favorite incarnation of The War Of The Worlds…except obviously people who don’t care about the franchise. For me it’s the George Pal movie but few of them actually base themselves off of the original H.G. Wells novel, preferring to go their own direction with the concept. I do have a graphic novel adaptation though and I do hope to get to a Scanning My Collection review of the time Superman fought the tripod-driving aliens. The average person may think of one of the more recent movies or the famous radio play by Orson Wells (no relation) that has been overblown by history. No, the country did not go into a blind panic. That was fake news, with reports that it was actually someone at the newspaper who hated those newfangled radios for being a quick news source. You see what I keep saying about old media hating new media?

However, did you know that in addition to the one novel and numerous comic book, movie, and even other audio adaptations there were video games? For this Halloween I bring you a video from Slopes Game Room going over the history of this franchise, including the parts you didn’t know about.

BW’s Morning Article Link: New Ad-Supported Streamer For Halloween

With Art Soundoff starting tomorrow (which I forgot to mention on Sunday) I thought the last Morning post for the next few weeks could help promote a new ad-supported free site since all the focus right now is on subscription services. Dark Matter TV focuses on horror but will also cover sci-fi and “true crime” shows, including a Jackie Chan movie. It should be fun for those of you who enjoy horror on Halloween night. With that we say goodby to the morning article/video post until December, because it’s time for…

See you tomorrow.

Video Games And Violence: The Research

This one has been sitting in the “filler video” cue longer than I intended. It’s time to fix that.

If you’ve been here long enough you’ve seen every new piece of media being blamed for the rise in crime. That’s rather easy compared to solving the actual cultural problems. Blame it on a movie, blame it on comics, blame it on television, blame it on video games. That’s the way people scared of something new will use to look like they’re solving the problem because it’s something they didn’t grow up with and thus do not understand. Naturally people aren’t apprehensive about new things will question those comments and even more naturally people who love those new media will gladly defend it. Neither side do so from an unbiased perspective because like everything else nobody wants their point of view challenged. “Agree with the hivemind I’m part of or be shunned/eliminated” is the order of the day. Just look at Twitter these days. There’s a reason I’m not on there much unless I’m posting something I want to promote.

Mathew “MatPat” Patrick of Game Theory decided to actually put his defense of video games against accusations that violent video games make people violent to the test by actually looking at the research as unbiased as he could to see if the world his newborn son will grow up in is indeed a world better off without his favorite media. Was his defense justified or does daddy have some explaining to do?
