The Wrong Reason To Support Bad Media

There was a commentary piece bouncing around Tumblr in the last couple of weeks that I haven’t had a chance to address, but now I have an opening. As of this commentary I have yet to see the gender-switched reboot of Ghostbusters but from the reviews I’ve seen the movie is not good but not necessarily terrible. Some of the jokes fall flat on their face but the movie and “Real” versions were less comedies and more horror with lighthearted elements that worked because the people involved knew how to mix the two. (The original Filmation live-action series and its cartoon spin-off were more comedy with little to no horror.) I might still see it, but probably on TV given my current situation. (Upcoming surgery + lack of income = not going to see a movie in the theaters anytime soon.)

However, there was that Tumblr piece. I don’t know how to find it this far out, so if somebody points me to it this will be the link for context. The essence was that women should support the new Ghostbusters because there aren’t enough female-driven action stories in the movies. I agree with that last part. While television has many female heroes in both live-action and animated dating back to at least the 1960s (women served as either a much-needed ally to male heroes or saved the day themselves, sometimes with a male assistant, and in some cases a husband-wife team of equal day saving), there has been a lack of them in the movies. At best you have a screaming woman in a stalker thriller who finds just enough inner strength to save herself from the killer because the men aren’t around at the time and she’s the lead. Even the famed Buffy the Vampire Slayer was only badass on television, while the movie version suffered from studio meddling. Joss Whedon finally got his original vision on TV because a relatively new network needed shows and had to take chances to stand out from the other networks. And that’s why the “support the female Ghostbusters to get more female led stories in movies” plan will not work. Because you’re still talking to Hollywood.

BW’s Morning Article Link: The Spider-Marriage Universe

spideystrippetemj

While a return of the Spider-Marriage is only a rumor based on some interesting evidence, there will be a Spiderverse besides the comic strip to have Peter and Mary Jane remain married. Renew Your Vows was a Secret Wars Redux (you know, the new one where Doctor Doom plays Beyonder again) tie-in where Peter and MJ got married and had a kid (Annie instead of May from the popular Spider-Girl universe). Now CBR reports that an ongoing is coming and they have a look at MJ and Annie’s new Spider Suits. Guess this is going to be a family affair now.

How To Own A Mech

Dynamo Joe #3

Thanks to a doctor visit to see if I’m ready to be reconnected (sorry to keep bringing it up but it’s a big deal as I’m getting close to the scheduled day) I have to drop another video on you guys. From AWE.Me’s Epic How To series (because they do more than Man At Arms), here’s how you can get your own giant robot battlesuit. It’s not as easy as it looks but easier than you thought. NOTE: Some bad language because for some reason F#$# needs to be censored but S##$ doesn’t. I don’t know when this started but I wish they’d make a choice and stick with it.

Thundercats #2 (Star)

All this trouble over who pays the check?

Thundercats #2

“Tears Of Sunrise”
WRITER: David Micheline

Despite Snarf’s warning to double-check the safety of local foods, Lion-O eats a berry that turns out to be the poisonous “Tears Of Sunrise”. If Lion-O can’t break the fever by sunrise he will die. Snarf goes to the wreckage of the ship to find Lion-O’s old teddy bear and gets caught by the mutants, who set a trap for the other Thundercats. Jaga talks Lion-O into going into battle, the result giving him the strength to fight off the Tears Of Sunrise. However, Mumm-Ra sees Lion-O and Jaga talking, which gives him a wicked plan.

What they got right: Lion-O never went through the life experiences that allow him to mature, so doing childish things like playing and eating something he shouldn’t is in line with his character this early in the series.

What they got wrong: Instead of adapting the second episode like they did the first, there’s some heavy exposition dumped here. Meeting the Berbils, the Cat’s Lair, the Thundertank, Mumm-Ra transforming just to show off…they would have been better off just doing the second episode. We’ll be seeing more adaptations as well as more original stories as this run continues but adapting “The Unholy Alliance” and “Berbils” (the other two establishing episodes) might have been a better idea before doing original stories. Maybe they wouldn’t have needed adaptations afterwards. Also, the Thundertank is drawn correctly, but not used correctly. They drew the front seats but nobody sits in them and the shell never closes. They all ride in the back as if that’s the control center of the tank and as a result it’s drawn larger than the actual Thundertank from this version.

Recommendation: This is a good original story that shows Lion-O’s progression, and I like the speech at the end about not forgetting your past as Lion-O secretly holds on to his stuffed “doofle” (the Thundarian version of a teddy bear). If your a fan of the original show pick this one up.
