Morning Article Link: Can Jeff Goldblum Save The World Again?

Independence Day movie box art

I don’t care what anybody else thinks (which shouldn’t surprise you by now) but I really enjoy Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day in all it’s cheesy glory. Well, it’s been a long time but we’re getting a sequel, Resurgence, and the trailer has dropped! Does the story need a sequel and can they do something good with it? Time will tell.

(continued from Steel #7) So what have Blood Syndicate been doing all this time? Looking for Aquamaria, not convinced she’s dead. As Wise Son’s little sister and his son escaped the destruction of Paris Island, the Syndicate run right into it in Hob’s Bay and decide to attack Rift directly. This doesn’t work well and Rift keeps trying to figure out how to work them into his new continuity, including the newly reconstituted Aquamaria. When the Syndicate’s personalities are too dominant he simply turns them into statues (Rift managing to escape) and when Dogg and the kids try to make him see reason he turns them into bubbles, still believing they’re just characters he created. (The event concludes in Static #14.)

What they got right: The X-Men parody was kind of cute and I’m glad Aquamaria is okay. Not knowing about Wise Son’s little sister and similar-aged young son it would be nice to know they survived…before being turned into bubbles. (There’s a reviewer meme for that I can’t use here due to keeping things PG.) Through research I’ve learned there is also a bit of foreshadowing for future revelations when Masquerade ends up in a dress at one point.

What they got wrong: Beyond that the story feels like padding, as if reminding the readers that they’re still in this crossover and then taking them out of it.

Recommendation: Outside of learning what the gang has been up to there isn’t much to this story. Get it only to complete the event.

Okay, no Chapter By Chapter again. As much as I don’t want to lose another “free day”, which I already gave up for Batman: The Animated Bible, at least until Christmas is over because I really want to get the video review and Captain Yuletide done (and real life keeps fighting me on this hard, which is why there was no graphic novel review this week) I’ll be doing the reviews on Mondays until I can get time to buffer a few chapters like I planned in the first place. I also need to get more Christmas stuff done on the articles since again I seem to be getting no help out there. None of you know of any good Christmas videos, comics, and websites on the internet?

Meanwhile, our look at the re-imagined Masters Of The Universe begins this week with not a comic but a special “encyclopedia”. This will give me an opportunity to discuss the new series in general before getting to the review of the tie-in comics, but without the detail of a Scanning My Collection feature. That works for me. Over at The Clutter Reports I did a quick project that was still rather important, so I don’t let that site go too long without an article. Some of my clutter clearing projects are short but when that’s all time has for me that’s what I’ll report on.

Saturday Night Christmas Showcase: Twas The Night Before Christmas

Christmas Specials Wiki logo

I know I’ve posted this before but how many new readers check the archives for Christmas Spotlight? Rankin/Bass’ Twas The Night Before Christmas is one of those specials that fall under the radar. A smart alec mouse ruins Christmas for mice and humans alike in his small village when he gets them all on Santa’s bad side, and one clockmaker’s attempt to undo the damage and save Christmas. It’s one of their animated specials but it’s one I always enjoyed as a kid back when it aired on CBS. Hopefully you and your kids will, too.

Friday Night Fight: Snowball Fighting Decepticon Style

With Christmas not only a few weeks away but on Friday this year even the mighty Spacebooger knows better than to have fisticuffs on Jesus birthday. So instead of the usual tournaments we’re having two one-shot combats before the next tournament. The theme is Snow White, but before I dig out Muppet Snow White I find he just wants a fight in the snow. With much of my time drained away this week I do have a short snow battle. So let’s do this!

It’s not rare for something to go wrong on a TV or movie set, or during a reality show. However, Cracked.com contributor Jim Avery found seven examples of popular shows and movies that resulted in some form of criminal charges. Will you be surprised to learn that Game Of Thrones, Captain Jack Sparrow, and Vanilla Ice are part of this list? You’ll still be surprised why.
