The Many MANY Intros Of Transformers: G1 Japan part 2

As noted last week, when Hasbro and Sunbow ended their Transformers cartoon, Japan kept going with numerous series. We’ve already looked at The Headmasters, where the original post-movie cast was slowly phased out. This week they’re all gone outside of a random cameo…sometimes even when they’re supposed to be dead and their body lost in an exploding star in “Dark Awakening”. While we are far from done with Transformers intros this will be the last we see of G1 shows, although characters may pop up again in the future.

The Japanese shows included a mix of original toys we still haven’t gotten molds of in the US (though some of their ideas would be reused in Hasbro’s lines, as I’ll get to) and toys designed for the US line sometimes made into new characters and nothing like their US counterparts. For example, Nightbeat was turned into a medical car and his Headmaster into a girl I’m only calling 13 because she has bumps on her chest and I feel dirty just writing that sentence. Most of these are available in the US through Shout Factory if you want to pick them up (I know I do) so let’s see how G1 TV truly ended.

BW’s Morning Article Link: Billy Joel’s TV Anthology Series

In an installment of Sing Me A Story I went over the Billy Joel song “Scenes From An Italian Restaurant“, and in another “Piano Man“. The man can tell a good story in musical form. Apparently someone is hoping that translates into a new TV anthology series based on his songs. I’ve seen songs turn into movies but I can only thing of one song that became a TV series, and “9 To 5” was spun-off from the movie. I’m curious to see how they’re going to pull this one off.

Disney Junior’s Rocketeer Trailer Drops

As I’ve noted over at The Clutter Reports I’m a bit behind in my emails. Actually I’m a few years behind but that’s besides the point. Due to this delay I only just found out that Disney Junior released the sneak peek trailer for their updated Rocketeer series. As noted in a previous commentary, Disney Junior’s The Rocketeer does not follow the adventures of Dave Steven’s action pilot Cliff Secord fighting Nazis and assorted criminals in the 1940s. I don’t think too many preschoolers would be into that and I know their parents wouldn’t be. Instead it will follow Kit Secord, presumably the descendant of Cliff and my guess would be Betty as she inherits the rocket pack.

While I still have a few misgivings I do want to give this a decent try. At least it’s not a remake…at least not yet. Let me show you the trailer and then I’ll get into what I like and don’t. Yes, I know, somehow adults aren’t allowed to dislike the preschool kids show because it’s “not for you” or some crap, but remember you’re talking to the adult who watches Paw Patrol or Miles From Tomorrowland (I haven’t seen much of the Mission Force One spinoff admittedly because it’s never one when I have a moment in the mornings) and enjoys it sometimes MORE than the stuff allegedly for me so you don’t get to qualify what is and isn’t for me, and even then “kids show” isn’t, wasn’t, and never will be an excuse to create garbage that is the equivalent of “jingling keys” even though kids shows are not supposed to be like adult shows. I’m probably one of the few adult who can give an honest assessment, so pipe down and find out what I actually think and why before you tell me I’m not allowed to like or hate it, okay?

BW’s Morning Article Link: Pig Artistry

Here’s a news story from here in Connecticut about an art studio called The Giggling Pig. They show kids how to make art and even what they can do with the characters they create. Creating the next generation of storytellers and artists is something I can get behind.

Evil Rey’s Impractical Lightsaber [VIDEO]

The lightsaber. In the Star Wars universe (although I guess it’s a multiverse now that the previous expanded universe was tossed out by the new owners) the lightsaber is the signature weapon of Jedi and Sith alike. There’s a certain ceremony to finding a natural crystal to power it, though the knowledge to create a synthetic one exists. It’s just a laser sword but how it’s been used has elevated it to one of those legendary weapons of science fiction and fantasy. (Star Wars being both, science-fantasy.) The prequels introduced different styles and later works have further come up with interesting designs like one with a built-in blaster or two or more lightsabers on a spinning holder. Probably the most famous alternate incarnation is Darth Maul’s quarterstaff like twin-bladed lightsaber, because it’s really cool.

In the recent trailers for Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker there has been a version of Rey that appears to have gone over to the Sith side. Various pre-movie theories abound but all weapons enthusiast Shad Brooks of Shadiversity is focused on the saber itself and the way it deploys. Is this actually a good weapon? The expert says no, it may actually be dumber than the laser-blade crossguard on Kylo’s saber. As a warm-up though he takes a look at the double-bladed saber in general.
