Bendis Is Wrong For Superman

Sorry, but for what should be obvious reasons discussing the section of The Death & Life Of Superman where we get into the “moving on” is something I’m not ready to do when we’re about to bury my uncle. Instead I come to rant, or rather to show someone else’s rant and do a little ranting of my own.

I knew it was going to happen. I knew Brian Michael Bendis was going to screw up Superman. Because while Bendis is admittedly a really good writer he only does so when he gets to play with his own continuity, like Ultimate Spider-Man. Put him in the main continuity and he tends to mess everything up because he’s only interested in the story he’s going to tell, not in the characters being used in the story. Here’s a review of Superman #1 by Just Some Guy (note, there will be swearing in this video) that showcases everything Bendis got wrong. And no, I don’t need to see the issue for myself because unless he’s lying about the events the point still fits.

BW’s Morning Article Link: The Hunt For American Sailor Moon

Ever since the above recording hit YouTube fans of Sailor Moon have tried to find the full pilot, mostly out of morbid curiosity mind you. Kotaku’s Cecilia D’Anastasio chronicled her own hunt, and while she didn’t find what she was looking for she did learn more about the creation of the pilot and a second attempt at trying the same idea. Which was somehow worse than what you see here.

BW Programming Update

I know I said I’d reveal the replacement for Friday Night Fights during this week’s Jake & Leon but I didn’t have a comic idea until this weekend…and then my Uncle passed way early Saturday morning and I had nothing in the way of creative energies. I’m connected to two close families, one on my mother’s side, which my uncle came from, and one on my father’s side. It’s been one crisis after another the past few years. I also didn’t do a Clutter Report since that is also done on Saturdays, but I should have that for next week.

In this week’s review set we’ll be finishing Robotech Warriors before bringing in the new ongoing Return To Macross spinoff, Academy Blues. As for feature articles, between family issues and dental issues I don’t know what my week is going to be like so I’m not completely sure. I do want to watch and review the released pilot for Rise Of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with the hopes it will at least be a good story since it’s a poor adaptation right out of the gate. And I want to discuss the trailers that came out of San Diego Formerly About Comics Con (SDFACC), but it depends on how much writing time I get this week. And on Friday I am hoping to unleash my new article miniseries. But I said I’d announce it on Sunday and here it is. I just wish I had the logo ready for you. Anyway, remember this?

If not, click the image to check it out.

Well it’s not the only production bible I’ve managed to come across. And possibly starting this week (although with current events I might have to move it to next week) I’ll be doing the same for…

A long time ago I looked at some of the early ideas for Star Trek: The Next Generation and I think that article led me to the writer’s guide for writers for the show. It should be a fascinating subject. And I’ll be starting on that. Here’s a link to the Memory Alpha wiki article on it, which includes a link to the pdf file I have, so you can read along when we finally start. This is the final first season draft, which means by then Wesley was a boy but there might still be enough differences to compare with the actual series. Like I said I hope to start it this Friday, but it depends on scheduling.

Hope you all have a great week and say a prayer (or whatever it is you do) for my Aunt, their kids, and their grandchildren. It’s going to be a rough time and they need all the support they can get.

Saturday Night Showcase: Macron-1

If I tell you 1980’s “Warring Demon God GoShogun” is a Japanese name would you believe it? It is and that’s only one translation of Sengoku Majin GōShōgun Wikipedia has to offer. The show follows a group who use a giant robot to fight the strong influence of an evil organization called Dokuga, set in the near future of the 21st century. With three jets that combine into a robot and dock with an even more powerful robot (the latter being the titular GoShogun) they fight the usual Japanese giant monsters.

1983’s Aku Daisakusen Srungle (Mission Outer Space Srungle plus other potential translations) has an asteroid space colony in the 26th century under attack from the evil organization (noticing a theme?) called Crime. Subtle. To fight them the law enforcers come up with a special unit called Gorilla. The names apparently get lamer from there.

What do these two shows have in common? In 1985 Saban Entertainment tried to combine these two shows together to form Macron-1, a show about fighting a you know what by now on two fronts in two different dimensions. The evil organization is called GRIPS (which is still better than Crime), who become aware of us when a test pilot accidentally travels to another dimension. He must come from the same organization as John Blackstar and Queen Marlena of Eternia. In our universe a team is formed using the giant robot MacStar-1 and the test pilot finds allies in the other dimension. The two teams together are codenamed Macron-1. It’s another one of those mash-up shows created to fill a US season length, but how well these shows are together makes Voltron look like Robotech.

To be honest I don’t even remember any full stories using the Srungle team in the alternate universe. But the show aired at like 6:30 on a weekday around here and I had school so I barely saw any of the episodes, so to me it appears the GoShogun spawned adventures with the team in the main universe were dominant. Even the two VHS tapes I have of the episodes features the MacStar team. It also features some of the oddest editing choices ever. Like worse than the “Cybernet Space Cube” from Transformers: Generation Two. They were trying to do some kind of MTV style edit and make it look like a bunch of music videos. See if it works for you in this compilation movie that was release on the aforementioned home videos. I should warn you that the theme song might get stuck in your head.

BW’s Best Friday Night Fights FINALE

Part 1|Part 2|Part 3|Part 4|Part 5|Part 6|Part 7|Part 8|Part 9|Part 10

And here we are, the last few fights from the Friday Night Fights. That means this is most likely my last Friday Night Fights article although I still might refer to them in the future. These might not all have won or even gotten a vote but it is my favorites of the entries I made to Friday Night Fights. I’m going to miss this event. It helped me find some of the sites I enjoy and enjoyed (some sites are no longer updated if they’re even up) and helped me connect with others in the blogging world. But at the end only three of us were left and it was all Spacebooger was posting on his site. He even stopped making the titular comic, but FNF continued on. Now it only lives on in our hearts.

The final themes of the Friday Night Fights include “Dog Days”, a summer themed tournament, Roundhouse, which didn’t need a roundhouse anything until the Prize Fight, SMACK, another tournament only themed for the Prize Fight (that I can work with) that would also be the last Friday Night Fight tournament. Let’s relive the last of the memories.
